Chapter 3
“PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST! WHAT?!”
Ryo sighed and put his head in his hands; he looked up to see Yamapi cleaning up the coffee he had spit out as a sign of shock. Ryo had revealed to him that he, not once, but twice slept with his ex-boyfriend Ueda.
“Are you insane?! Does Uchi know?! I mean--what the hell were you thinking?!”
Ryo sighed again, “I don’t know! I just--”
“You just what? Thought that a night together might bring back the sparks or something? What happened to you vowing never to involve yourself with Ueda Tatsuya again? I thought you two would never see each other, honestly,” Yamapi shook his head as he took a big sip of coffee, this time without spitting it out.
“I--I thought so too. It’s funny how things work out, huh?”
Yamapi’s eyes got big, “That’s all you can say?! You--You--You” he looked around to make sure no one was listening and whispered, “You cheated on your boyfriend--with your ex--TWICE!”
Ryo sunk his head, “I know! I--I--I couldn’t think straight. It was almost like I--I lost control of the situation in an instant--like it wasn’t me doing--well--Tatsuya. It was the old me--the me that I was when he and I were together.”
“That makes sense--in a weird messed-up sort of way.”
“Spare me your nonsensical insults,” Ryo glared, “I already know what trouble I’m in--I only told you because I thought you would help me--but apparently not!”
“Whoa whoa, who said I wasn’t going to help you? We just gotta think--how do you tell Uchi without--”
Ryo‘s mouth dropped, “NO! We’re not telling Hiroki!”
“Well--if we’re not going to tell Uchi, what do you plan on doing?”
“First of all--I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE! THAT’S WHY I’M ASKING YOU! And second of all--the problem lies with Tatsuya--I think it’s got something to do with me being around him--there’s just this aura about him and--”
Just then Ryo got a weird gleam in his eyes and instantly, Yamapi knew what his friend was thinking.
“Snap out of it!”
“Huh?!”
“You--you were getting that same stupid look on your face--I remember the last time you got it.”
“When?” Ryo now had a look of angered confusion on his face.
“When you first saw Tatsuya,” Yamapi replied with a serious look on his face.
Ryo took a breath in, as he felt his heart stop for just a second. He looked away, with guilt in his eyes but then looked back at Yamapi who was staring him straight in the eyes.
“WHAT?!”
“You know what you have to do, don’t you?”
“Huh?”
“You’re going to have to stop seeing Tatsuya--for as long as it’ll take you to get over him,” Pi crossed his legs and clasped his hands, placing them on his knee.
Ryo sat lifeless, and thought. What Pi was suggesting was basically the same request that Jin had for him just the other day. At first, it just seemed like paranoia from someone else’s boyfriend but now that Yamapi was saying that same thing, Ryo knew that he had to stop seeing Ueda at all costs.
“Okay,” he said.
“Good--now, are you going to reimburse me for that coffee or should I just add it to your tab?”
Ryo threw a balled-up napkin at Yamapi and finally took a sip of his coffee which had cooled while he was talking and thinking. Afterwards, Yamapi walked with Ryo back to his apartment that he shared with Uchi. But Pi stopped and Ryo looked at him.
“Who-Who’s that with Uchi?” Pi pointed down the street and Ryo looked.
It was Jin standing next to Uchi, smiling and laughing. Ryo felt his heart tug a bit and he just sighed.
“That’s Akanishi Jin--aka Hiroki’s co-worker--aka Tatsuya’s NEW boyfriend,” he frowned.
Pi coughed, “WHAT?! You’re--You’re telling me that he and Uchi work together? Tatsuya’s new boyfriend?! Wow--it’s like a fucking drama or something.”
“Yeah well--”
“Whoa--” Pi continued looking at the pair and Ryo turned again, this time his mouth was gaping wide. The pair were in what looked like a loving embrace, something two co-workers would not be doing unless something else was going on. Ryo’s mouth closed and his lips tightened; he pushed up his sleeves and cracked his knuckles.
And in a flash, he was down the street, stomping over to Jin and Uchi, taking a massive swing at the man who was dating his ex. Jin fell to the floor, holding his cheek and crying out loud.
“OW!”
“JIN! RYO!”
“YOU SON OF A BITCH!”
Yamapi shook his head, “That Ryo--” and he ran after his friend, stopping him from practically killing Jin. Uchi rushed down to Jin’s side, checking his cheek and stroking his hair.
“HIROKI--WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH THIS GUY?!”
“RYO! CALM DOWN!”
“BOTH OF YOU CALM DOWN, DAMMIT!” Yamapi interrupted.
Ryo and Uchi shut their mouths and pouted.
“What’s going on?” Ryo grunted.
“Jin and I were just having lunch together and that was it.”
“LIAR!”
“He’s telling the truth, Nishikido-san. We were just having lunch,” Jin replied as he struggled to get up, Uchi helping him the whole time.
“If it was ‘just having lunch’ then why the hell were you two hugging?!”
Uchi‘s eyes grew big, “I--”
Jin attempted to finish, “We--”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought,” Ryo glared and started walking away. But Uchi ran after him.
“Ryo, wait!”
“What?!”
“You don’t understand! Jin and I are just friends--nothing more.”
“Nothing more? Nothing more?! Friends don’t hug like that! They don’t look at each other like that! They just--”
Ryo stopped; his heart stopped. He realized that he was being a bigger hypocrite than he could ever imagined.
“Ryo, I didn’t mean--”
“It’s okay, Hiroki. I believe you. You’re just friends,” he replied in a monotone voice.
“This is really not the time for your stupid sarcasm, Ryo! I--”
Ryo put his hand up, “Don’t worry, I’m not mad. I’m not--mad.” He put his hands in his pockets and looked away.
“I--well I--I--” Uchi had no idea how to respond to Ryo’s unusual behavior, “Are you okay?”
Ryo had a large fake smile on his face, “I’m perfectly fine. Everything’s fine.”
“Ryo, don’t--”
“I’m fine, Hiroki! Just fine! I have to go!”
“Nishikido-san! Wait!”
Ryo turned and saw Jin running up to him, with a semi-swollen cheek and red eyes.
“It’s not what you--”
“It’s okay, I already told Hiroki that I’m not mad.”
“I just--I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea especially since I told you yesterday that I wanted you to stay away from Tatsuya.”
Ryo’s eyes got big and he started shaking his head at Jin, signifying that he didn’t want the other man to say anything in front of Uchi. Unfortunately, Uchi heard everything.
“You two--talked yesterday?” he asked, with a suspicious look on his face.
“I--I--” Ryo started to sweat.
“What were you talking about yesterday?”
“Tatsuya--and Nishikido-san’s former relationship,” Jin said bluntly.
“Oh, really?”
Ryo shook his head and put his palm to his forehead.
“Yes--and I--haha--I asked if Nishikido-san could--um--not come to the next company event?”
“Are you effin kidding me?”
“Huh?” Ryo and Jin both gasped.
“Jin--are you an idiot? What gives you the right to ask Ryo not to go to something just because you’re worried about Ueda-san doing something with him? I understand that Ueda is your boyfriend but if you have some trust issues, that is between you and your boyfriend not you and mine.”
“Uchi-kun--”
“I’m sorry, Jin but I can’t believe you would do something like that,” Uchi shook his head but then turned to Ryo, “I’m so sorry, Ryo. I--”
“Look--I have to tell you both something. Something--really important,” Ryo said with a slight nervousness in his voice.
Yamapi, who was standing nearby, started waving his arms around and shaking his head, mouthing the word “no” as he did so.
“I--I’m sorry for making things so awkward for you two because of mine and Tatsuya’s relationship with one another. It’s--It’s all our fault.”
“Huh?”
Yamapi sighed with relief.
“Ah--never mind. I guess--it’s not something we can control exactly, right? Well, I should get going. Come on Pi--see you at home, Hiroki. Later, Akanishi.”
Jin and Uchi blinked, confused out of their minds. Ryo didn’t look back and just walked very quickly away.
“I was afraid you were going to say something stupid--oh wait, you did! What the hell was that?!”
“I don’t know--I wasn’t thinking. I just needed something to say! Instead of--you know--the truth.”
“Well, I guess so but did you really have to be so friggin’ cheesy?”
“SHUT UP!”
Ryo shoved Yamapi which made the taller man laugh in response as they continued walking down the street.
The next night, Uchi came up to Ryo as he was sitting in the living room, watching TV.
“Ryo, can I talk to you?”
“Hmm?”
“You see, tomorrow--there’s this sort of dinner--it’s like an awards thing and our boss is winning something so me and Jin have to give a presentation. Anyways--I know he’s going to be bringing Ueda-san but--”
“You’re trying to tell me you don’t want me to go?”
“NO! NO! That’s not it! I’m just saying--I talked to Jin and he told me about his fears and I reassured him that nothing would happen. Unlike him, I have trust in my boyfriend,” Uchi smiled and took Ryo’s hand and started rubbing it.
“Hiroki, I--”
Once again, Ryo felt like confessing the whole thing; the night of the party when he and Ueda crossed paths for the first time in years; the other day when the two got into a fight and ended up in each other’s arms; the fact that he knew he was still in love with Ueda.
“What?”
“I won’t go if you don’t want me there--if Akanishi doesn’t want me there--if it’s going to cause too much trouble, I’ll just--I’ll just stay home.”
“What? Are you kidding me? What fun would it be if I couldn’t have the man I love escorting me to something that could make my career that much sweeter?”
“Huh?”
“I mean--why would I want to go somewhere without you by my side? I want you there, Ryo. I wouldn’t want to go if I couldn’t bring you along,” Uchi sat down next to his boyfriend, putting his arms around the other’s shoulder and placing his head on the side of his neck.
“Yeah--great.”
“Besides--Ueda didn’t look like he was too happy to see you last time--especially whenever you and I would kiss or touch each other. I wouldn’t mind making your ex a little jealous,” he said with a slightly evil smirk.
“You’re so bad!” Ryo growled suggestively before attacking Uchi like a hungry dog, jumping on top of him and nuzzling his neck.
At the awards dinner, Ryo felt himself get butterflies in his stomach. He hadn’t yet seen Ueda and he was getting more and more anxious. The two hadn’t spoken since the last time they had slept together and it made Ryo feel like he could just scream if he didn’t get a chance to see the other.
Finally, he turned and entering the main room were Jin and Ueda, walking side-by-side, surprisingly not showing any signs of affection such as hold-handing or anything of the like. Ryo took a deep breath and decided he should disappear from sight until Ueda was alone. He figured it wouldn’t take long since Jin was such a “friendly” person and would most likely ditch his boyfriend to talk to someone else.
The time came and Ueda was standing near a wall, alone and holding his hands in front of his waist. Ryo cleared his throat and began walking over.
“Nishikido-san, I see you came!”
Ryo stopped and slowly turned to see a smiling Jin waving at him. He wanted to run, covering his face and pretending that he never showed up but then Jin came over to him.
The latter whispered, “I’d advise you to keep your distance from my boyfriend,” while still keeping a smile on his face.
Ryo’s heart sank. He felt a twinge of anger at hearing the other’s threat.
“I think that if you should be worried about anyone--it’s your boyfriend, not me.”
He walked away and Jin looked stunned at the other man. Ryo shook himself, once out of sight, unable to believe that he could actually be so bold after all the guilt and anxiety that had been eating at him that day.
He came back into the main room and made eye contact with Ueda, who was blushing furiously and trying his best to look away. Jin was out of sight as was Uchi and Ryo could only assume that the two were getting ready for their presentation.
Without thinking, Ryo made his way over to Ueda and started to talk.
“Hey.”
“Hello.”
“How’ve you been?”
“What do you care? You’re the one who left without saying a word--I got the impression that it didn’t matter to you what happened to me.”
“Hey!” Ryo whispered angrily, “Don’t start getting all defensive. I didn’t know what to say--I couldn’t feel anything but absolute guilt after we did what we did. Anyways, what was I supposed to do?”
“You could’ve called me!” Ueda snapped, whispering as well.
“You really think your boyfriend would have been okay with that?”
Ueda looked like he was about to respond with a witty comment but then he thought about it. He started to walk out of the room and Ryo followed him. Then he stopped and turned to the other man.
“I guess you’re right--”
“You’re damn right I am! You know he came over to me and threatened me that if I talked to you he--he would probably do something?”
“Wow--poor you,” Ueda said with false sympathy, “Weren’t you the one who said that you could take Jin? That you could kick his ass and still have enough energy?”
“What are you, my biographer? Of course I could take him--I just--I don’t like coming to these things and being threatened as soon as I walk in the door!”
“Well maybe if you weren’t such a pervert, people wouldn’t have to threaten you!”
“What?! Who are you calling a pervert?!”
“The man who fucked me in my own dressing room!”
Ryo’s face went white. When he started to think straight again, he retaliated.
“It was a mistake! All a damn mistake!”
“You say that but I know as soon as Jin’s back is turned, you’d pull something again!”
“Don’t act like you wouldn’t like it!”
“Who are you to say that I would like it?! I never felt so dirty in my entire life! I still can’t believe I let you!”
“Well that shows you are as much at fault as I am. So stop making me out to be the bad guy--you’re no damn victim yourself.”
“I--”
“What?”
“I can’t talk to you anymore! You’re such an asshole! I--”
Ueda wanted to walk away but Ryo grabbed his hand. The moment seemed to go in slow motion and the two faced each other, staring into the other’s eyes and breathing softly.
“I’m sorry,” Ryo whispered.
“What?”
“I’m sorry for causing you so much trouble. I just--I can’t help myself when I’m around you. I don’t know what it is.”
“Ryo, don’t--”
“I’m sorry, Tatsuya but there’s just something that I can’t control. I can’t stop thinking about you and when I see you, my heart won’t stop beating quickly. You make me sweat and my mouth go dry. I can’t stop shaking and my eyes won’t look away. I--”
“What?”
“I think I--I’m still in love with you!”
Ueda’s mouth dropped. Ryo was shaking, his hands were holding Ueda’s and he looked deeply into the other man’s eyes. He wanted to kiss the other man but couldn’t because he heard something.
“I knew it.”
He turned and looked to see someone standing nearby, looking at the couple and glaring madly.
“Oh my--”
“JIN!”
