Chapter 3
Takki smiled and handed Yamapi a giant box. Yamapi looked shocked not only at seeing Takki at his party but also at the large gift he brought with him. Toma just looked angry and gave Takki his best glare to which Takki did not reply. Tsubasa, on the other hand, noticed and smiled at Toma who looked embarrassed.
The older man walked over and started talking to Toma and, of course, Yamapi noticed. He stared at Toma, looking at how red his cheeks were getting and how shaky he appeared. Pi scowled.
“Hello? Pi-chan? I was talking to you--” Takki waved his hand around to get the other man’s attention.
“Hmm? OH! Sorry, T-T-Takki,” Pi was now the one blushing.
Toma looked from across the room at Pi and Takki and felt his insides turn.
“Toma--”
“Hmm?”
Tsubasa smiled, “You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?” he said, trying to play dumb.
“Staring at Yamapi when I’m talking to you--does Takki really bother you that much?”
Toma pouted and looked away and Tsubasa just laughed.
Meanwhile Ryo and Jin were looking at their friends and shaking their heads.
“Can you believe them? They’re so in love and don’t even realize it,” Jin whispered, before taking a sip from his cup.
Ryo didn’t say anything and just looked at Pi who was staring at an oblivious Toma.
“Idiots,” he muttered before walking off.
A while later, Toma split off from Tsubasa, who went to go to talk to Sho and Ohno, and noticed a familiar face huddled in a corner.
“Eita!”
The tall figure looked up, his arms crossed and his eyes big. Toma smiled and walked over to him.
“Hi-hi T-Toma,” he stuttered.
Toma gently slapped him on the shoulder, “Come on, don’t act all anti-social. Mingle--talk to people--you know Ryo, right? Talk to him! Meet new people! Do something other than just staying in this corner, looking like a creep.”
Eita smirked, “You sure are happy, aren’t you?”
Toma’s heart dropped.
“W-what?”
“I mean--it’s your best friend’s birthday--of course, you’d be happy, right?”
Toma blinked, as if he didn’t know what Eita was implying.
“Yeah--sure--um--I’m happy that Pi’s birthday is today and he’s enjoying this party--but--”
“But?”
Toma turned and looked at Yamapi, a bit longingly. He then looked back at Eita and said, “But we haven’t even really gotten to talk yet.”
“Don’t worry--you’ll talk soon. He’s just gotta greet his guests and--yeah, don’t worry,” Eita patted Toma’s shoulder and went to talk to Ryo who was brooding by himself.
Toma just stayed in place and crossed his arms, his lower lip puffing a bit like he was pouting. He got side-winded by Takki who looked unusually happy to see him.
“Toma-chan! How are you?” he grinned.
Toma turned and looked at him strangely, “I’m fine, Takki. And you?”, not that he cared about what Takki had been up to lately.
“I’m great! It’s so nice of you to throw Pi-chan this party. He looks like he’s really enjoying it,” Takki smiled, disgusting Toma even more.
“Yeah, well--I wouldn’t know since he hasn’t exactly said anything to me. But I guess he’s busy talking to his friends--and you,” he muttered.
“I’m sure he’s very thankful,” Takki put his hand on Toma’s shoulder and the younger man felt like ripping it off, “Pi-chan’s a very good person. Now if you’ll excuse me--my cup’s getting a low on alcohol.”
And with that, Takki laughed and walked away, leaving Toma unexplainably annoyed.
“Stupid son-of-a--” he muttered.
Yamapi sat himself down on Toma’s couch and sighed, sounding like he was a bit exhausted. Turns out that pretty much everyone had been hugging him and giving him birthday wishes and frankly, he was a bit worn out.
Aiba sat next to him and sighed as well. Pi laughed and asked him, “What are you so tired about?”
“Yoko is on something--he keeps jumping around and acting like a complete moron--” Aiba put his head in his hands and groaned.
Pi continued laughing and Aiba looked at him, “So have you and Toma made up?”
“WHAT?!” Pi stopped laughing and instead gasped.
“I heard you had a fight and that you two made a scene in the middle of a restaurant last night,” Aiba babbled, not realizing how embarrassed Pi was.
“Where did you hear that?!”
“Nino--who heard it from Jun--who heard it from Shun--who, I’m told, was there when it happened,” Aiba pointed to each person without them noticing.
Yamapi put his palm to his forehead and exhaled deeply. Aiba yammered on, “I also heard that Ryo and Jin were there as well and that’s what made Toma so mad.”
“THAT is not the reason for he and I getting in an argument--which we didn’t even do! It was just--a misunderstanding! Nothing more!” Pi grunted and Aiba started to look scared.
“Um--I’m going to go and--yeah,” he got up quickly and subtly hid behind Yoko who wasn’t sure what was going on.
Yamapi sat on the couch feeling embarrassed beyond description, but instead of getting angry, he decided to just resume mingling with the guests at his party.
Tsubasa made his way over to the birthday boy and slapped him on the shoulder.
“What the--oh, Tsuba--why the hell are you hitting me for? That’s not nice,” Pi whined.
Tsubasa just pointed to Toma who was leaning against a wall, drinking repeatedly from his cup and crossing his arms, his eyes drawn to the floor and a frown on his face. Tsubasa didn’t say anything but Yamapi knew what he was trying to say.
“Thanks,” Pi whispered and Tsubasa nodded his head before walking away. Pi exhaled deeply and walked over to Toma who was starting to act a bit drunk.
“Hey, Toma, I--”
“Oh--now y-you wanna talk to me? Haha I-I thought everyone else here-here was more important than me--thankfully, I’m not right, or am I? Huh, Pi? Is everyone more important? Even though I threw this party--you didn’t even bother thanking me--figures,” Toma took another drink out of his cup before Pi grabbed it.
“Heeeyyy--” the older man slurred.
“What the hell’s gotten into you?” Pi angrily whispered.
“W-what do you-you care? Why don’t you-you go to talk to Takki--or-or Ryo--or Aiba--or Jin--or--” Toma trailed off, as he struggled to stand up.
Pi grabbed Toma’s hand and pulled him into the bedroom, shutting the door behind him. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at the closed door.
“Oh my gawd--there finally going to do it?! HERE?!” Jin gasped. Jun, who was standing next to him, just smacked the younger man on the back of the head and shook his own.
Toma drunkenly stuttered, “Whoa--whoa--Pi--now--now is not the time for s--”
“Are you crazy?!” Pi interrupted
“Huh?” Toma blinked sloppily, as he tried keeping consciousness.
“You’re getting drunk at my party?! And you’re calling me out just because I didn’t talk to you?! You could’ve easily talked to me--pulled me away from any of those idiots you invited and I could’ve given you a proper thank you.”
“Oh sure,” Toma sounded a bit more lucid, “Like I could’ve dragged you away from Takki. Tell me, Pi, are you really over him? ‘Cause it looks to me like things haven’t changed since high school--you have the same stupid smile on your face whenever you talk to him. Not to mention you blush like a fucking schoolgirl whenever he goes near you.”
Pi looked a bit offended but then he reciprocated, “What?! I don’t know what you’re talking about? And besides--what about you and Shun? Or you and Tsubasa? And let’s not forget about that guy--Eita, is it--I see the way he looks at you--I wouldn’t be surprised if you two were secretly seeing each other behind my back and--”
Toma’s mouth dropped, “D-don’t go dragging Eita into this--or Tsubasa--or Shun. You don’t even know what you’re talking about.”
“I don’t? Because--from what I’m seeing--you’re acting like one big fucking hypocrite--yelling at me because I just happen to be talking to someone that I’ve known for a long time and--”
“And someone that you’ve been in love with for years!” Toma finished Pi’s sentence.
Pi’s scowl turned into a shocked expression. He didn’t say anything for a few minutes but when he finally did, he started saying things that Toma didn’t believe.
“If I’ve told you once--I’ve told you a thousand times--I am NOT in love with Takki--that was a long time ago--and I told you that I gave up on him when he rejected me.”
“He may have rejected you once but he sure as hell isn’t leaving you alone. I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt the same way--the way he acts around you--the way he talks about you,” Toma shuddered out of disgust.
“You know what--it doesn’t matter how Takki feels about me. I don’t like him in that way--not anymore. And even if I did, what would it matter to you? You and I are friends--nothing more and--”
Toma’s eyes widened and he then just started glaring at Pi, who had realized what he said but decided not to take it back.
“I don’t--I don‘t need this. Thanks for throwing me this party, Toma, and thanks for ruining my birthday! You’re a great friend, you really are--especially when you’re drunk,” Pi stormed out of Toma’s bedroom and grabbed his coat, opening and then slamming the front door.
“Yamapi--hold up,” Takki ran after the younger man, stopping Jin and Ryo who were about to do the same. Ryo looked hurt but Jin didn’t seem too offended.
Everyone else turned and looked at Toma who was sitting on his bed. He grunted and got up, slamming his bedroom door.
Jun looked at all the party guests who were shocked beyond belief and nervously smiled, “Uh--maybe--maybe it’s time we all leave.”
Then came a drunken cry, “NOOOO! Let’s keep dancing!” The cry came from Nino who was clutching at Ohno, who was sober and very embarrassed.
Jun’s smile disappeared and turned into a vengeful glare, “Get your damn hands off of Ohno!” He ran over to Nino and attempted breaking them up once again.
Everyone just looked at the trio very oddly.
Meanwhile, Yamapi had gone up on the roof and Takki had followed him up there.
“So--that was some fight you two had,” he laughed nervously.
Yamapi said nothing and just leant over the railing, staring at the city skyline.
“If you don’t mind me asking--what were you guys fighting about? Was it because you never thanked Toma-chan for the party?”
Pi muttered, “Sort of--” he sighed wearily, “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. He’s always getting mad at me for the stupidest things.”
“Could it be--because he’s jealous of you and your friends?”
Pi turned and looked at Takki, amazed, “H-How did you know that?”
“I can pick up on these things--” Takki smiled, boasting.
Pi blinked.
“Okay, I overheard your shouting--actually everyone did--and--ah, maybe I shouldn’t have told you that,” he noticed that Pi started sinking down to the ground.
Pi eventually sat on the ground and leant against the railing, “What am I going to do?”
Takki sat down next to him, “Well--it looks to me that you two have a problem with sharing each other with other people--despite the fact that you share a lot of the same friends.”
“Exactly! It doesn’t make sense that he would get so jealous over Ryo--or Jin--or you--I mean--”
Takki laughed, “So Toma-chan’s jealous of me, huh? That’s cute.”
Pi blushed madly, “Well--it’s not like he has anything to be jealous of--it’s not like you and I are dating or anything--we’re just friends--”
Takki’s smile went away and Pi turned and saw, “Takki?”
The older man looked at Pi who had a curious expression on his face. And in an instant, Pi could feel the other man’s lips on his. His heart stopped beating and he couldn’t catch his breath.
Seconds later, Takki said something that made Pi’s chest grow heavy.
“Pi-chan--I--love you.”
