Title: If I Only Had the Heart [Chapter 5]

Summary: Ryo, the class bully, falls in love with the shy transfer student, Ueda. The problem is that Ueda doesn’t say a word and Ryo can’t ever get him to speak. Ryo does all he can to help the boy he loves break out of his shell. But he’s in for the shock of his life when he finds out the reason why Ueda has such a hard time speaking. Will the frequently violent and mean Ryo ever be able to help the passive, good-natured Ueda talk again?

Chapter 5
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Ryo asked, before starting his car and driving off to Ueda’s hometown, for the second time.
“You’re asking us?!” Pi looked at him, like he was crazy.
“Well--I don’t know. Maybe I should go on my own--I mean, it’s all my idea anyways and Ueda means more to me--ah, forget I said that last part,” Ryo put his head against the top of the steering wheel.
“Don’t go denying it again--you already confessed that you liked him,” Yamapi crossed his arms and leant back into the passenger’s seat.
“But I’m not sure if I can go through with this--I think I should be kicking Nakamaru’s ass in the first place, stupid-son-of-a-bitch--always interrupting me when I’m trying to--stupid,” Ryo muttered as he stared through the dashboard window.
His friends just stared at him until he said something else.
“Okay,” he put his hands on the steering wheel, “Let’s do this shit.”
Ryo started up the car and the foursome was off to go and track down Ueda’s attacker. When they drove through town, they weren’t lucky enough to find Koki and his friends like they had been the week before.
“Okay, where the hell is this guy?” Ryo muttered.
“Who knows? It’s not like we actually asked him where he hangs out all the time,” Yamapi commented.
Ryo turned and glared at Yamapi before looking around again. He finally pulled over into a mall parking lot and took a deep breath, before unbuckling his seatbelt.
“What are you doing?” Jin asked.
“I don’t know, Jin! I’m not sure what I’m going to do either because I don’t know where the fuck this guy is!”
“You don’t need to yell at him, Ryo! It’s not his fault,” Toma defended, patting Jin’s back as the taller boy sniffled a bit.
Yamapi stepped in, “Um--I think we have some company,” he pointed towards the front of the mall and sure enough, there was Koki and a few of his friends and some girls as well.
“Stupid son of a bitch,” Ryo muttered before opening the door and stepping out.
“Whoa! Ryo! Where are you going?” his friends called out to him but Ryo didn’t listen and instead made his way over to Koki.
“Hey Tanaka!” Ryo called out, prompting Koki to turn around.
“Oh, you’re--”
But before Koki could fully acknowledge him, Ryo punched Koki in the face. When Koki fell to the floor, Ryo jumped on top of him and started hitting him and punching him.
“What the--son of a--get off of me!” Koki started hitting back and pretty soon the two were fighting and rolling around on the floor. When his friends caught up to him, Ryo was pulled off of Koki by Yamapi. Koki, in turn, was pulled away by one of his friends.
“HEY, WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM, YOU BASTARD?!” Koki shouted, looking shocked that he had been attacked.
“YOU STUPID ASSHOLE, YOU HURT UEDA!” Ryo shouted back as he tried struggling out of Yamapi’s arms but to no avail.
“What are you talking about--who are you anyways?” Koki was let go by his friends and was dusting himself off and checking for blood.
“Oh you don’t remember me? Ryo Nishikido--we met last week, when you and your gang of creeps were at that liquor store.”
“Um--oh yeah, Nishikido,” Koki remembered and then he realized something else, “WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”
“You--you’re the son of a bitch who kept Ueda from talking. You’re the one who beat him just because he confessed to you--you’re the one who--”
“I didn’t do anything, you moron!” Koki angrily interrupted.
Ryo stared at him, scowling with his mouth slightly open.
“What?”
“It wasn’t me! I didn’t beat up that Ueda guy--I don’t know who it was, but it wasn’t me.”
“WAIT--how do I know you’re not lying, you little bastard?”
“I’M NOT! By the way--who told you that it was me?!”
Ryo paused, before whispering, “Nakamaru Yuichi.”
Koki stopped to listen and then started laughing. Ryo was a bit confused to hear laughter coming from the other boy.
“That little asshole told you it was me that beat Ueda up? Haha--fucking psychopath,” Koki continued laughing, but he sounded more sarcastic than anything.
“What--what’s up with Nakamaru?” Yamapi jumped in.
“The guy’s insane! He’s always been a total nut job--I can’t believe he’d blame ME for what happened to Ueda,” Koki’s laughter disappeared.
“He--”
“Nakamaru has been causing trouble for me and my friends since middle school. And we’re not the only ones he likes to mess with--he’s been causing troubles for the girls too. The dude’s a perv and a creep and he’s a stalker.”
“Wait--are you saying that he beat up Ueda?” Jin mumbled.
“Hey, I’m not saying anything--but the rumor was he and Ueda--uh--you know,” Koki smirked suggestively.
“Excuse me?” Ryo looked at Koki and glared, offended at the insinuation that Koki was making.
Koki started to whisper like he was telling a big secret, “Look--all I know is the rumors--no one really knows the truth except Ueda and whoever beat him up. I just always suspected that it was Nakamaru--”
“WHAT?!” Ryo gasped.
“Yeah, from what I heard--he and Ueda used to date,” Koki jumped back a little, looking scared by Ryo.
Ryo’s eyes went bigger than they had done in recent weeks. His heart dropped and his stomach flopped.
“They--they used to date?” Ryo whispered.
“Mmmhmm. And from what I heard--one day Ueda told one of his friends about their relationship and pretty soon the whole school knew.”
“So what? They were keeping it a secret?” Toma asked.
Koki nodded, “I’m not that surprised--Nakamaru’s pretty--uh--how should I say it? He likes maintaining his heterosexual status at our school?”
Ryo and his friends stared at Koki, their mouths hanging open and their arms dropped in front of them.
“Wh-wh-wh-wh-wh-what are you saying?” Ryo stuttered, his eyes as big as they could go.
Koki looked around before saying, “That’s about all I know.”
Ryo grabbed the other by the shirt and looked him in the eye, “TELL ME ALL YOU KNOW BEFORE I KICK YOUR ASS AGAIN!”
“LET GO OF ME, YOU ASSHOLE!”
Pi pulled Ryo away and Ryo looked at Koki, “Are you sure that’s all you know?! He--He and Ueda--they used to date--and it was a secret--and Nakamaru didn’t want anyone to know--because he was seemingly straight?”
Koki just nodded, grimacing. Ryo couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“And what’s even weirder is,” Koki continued, “he hasn’t shown up at school all week and no one knows where he went--”
Yamapi explained, “Oh, he’s been visiting Ueda in our town--”
Just Ryo shouted, “UEDA!”
Then out of nowhere, he turned around and headed back to the car, practically running. His friends looked at him and then back at Koki who just shrugged. They then left him and ran after Ryo.
“Ryo!” they called out to him, worried that he might leave without them. Luckily they caught up in time and managed to jump into the car as Ryo sped off.
“What the hell is wrong with you?! Why’d you--”
“We need to go find Ueda! Gawd only knows what that bastard’s doing to him,” Ryo grunted as he stepped on the gas.
In probably the half the time it would have normally been for the group to come back to home, they arrived and Ryo immediately made his way to Ueda’s house. When he did, he slammed on the brakes and jumped out of the car.
But what shocked him was what was going on in front of his eyes. Maru was standing in front of Ueda and holding the shorter boy’s hand.
“Tatsuya--” Maru whispered.
“Tatsuya?” Ryo whispered to himself, not realizing that it was Ueda’s given name.
“Tatsuya--I can’t say I’m sorry enough about what happened. I came all this way to say that I--”
Ueda’s eyes got big as did Ryo’s.
“Ryo, what’s going on?” Yamapi called to him.
“Shut up!” he whispered back to his friend before turning back. He gulped and waited for what Maru had to say.
“Tatsuya--I love you!” and with that, Maru grabbed Ueda and kissed him passionately on the mouth. And Ryo could feel his anger boil over.
“SON OF A--”
Ryo opened the gate and came running into Ueda’s front yard, screaming and prompting Ueda and Maru to pull apart, at which point Ryo tackled Maru to the ground.
“You fucking bastard! I’ll kill you!” Ryo shouted before punching Maru in the face after the taller boy attempted to protect himself.
Maru somehow garnered some strength and pushed Ryo off of him before shouting back at him.
“What is your problem, you maniac?! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” he screamed, as he wiped a bit of blood off the side of his mouth.
“You’re my problem, dick! I--Ueda--you can’t possibly believe anything this guy says,” Ryo looked at Ueda who was very scared and confused.
“Don’t tell Tatsuya what to believe, you midget! He’s not your property,” Maru growled as he picked himself up off the floor.
Ryo got up off the floor and went right up to Maru, looking the other boy straight in the eye.
“I know you beat him up,” he whispered.
Maru’s eyes got big and he quietly said, “What?”
“You heard me! I know you beat him up!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about--I didn’t do it, did I, Tatsuya?” Maru gave Ueda a look that made the shorter boy blush and look away, shaking his head furiously.
Maru continued, “See?”
Ryo bit his tongue and laughed sarcastically, “You think I’m going to believe you? After you lied about not knowing Ueda and now--look at him--HE CAN’T FUCKING TALK BECAUSE OF YOU!”
“I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING TO HIM, YOU ASSHOLE!”
“YOU GAWDDAMN LIAR!”
Ryo then took a swing at Maru and pushed the other boy back to the ground. Meanwhile, Ueda was freaking out and unable to stop the two of them because of his inability to speak. Just then, through the gate, came Jin, Yamapi, and Toma.
“What the hell’s going on here?!” Pi cried out, running over to pull Ryo away but got pushed away by Maru who was kicking and punching mostly air.
The pair was getting into a sparring match as Ueda and Ryo’s friends watched and they couldn’t do anything to stop it. Maru kept punching Ryo in the face and it seemed like he was going to get the better of the other boy. Ryo coughed as bruises formed on his face and a cut to his lip started bleeding; he stared at Maru who had his fist in the air and was about to deal a blow that could knock Ryo out cold, when all of a sudden, a voice was heard.
“STOP!”
