Chapter 3

“You wanna what?!”

It had been a week since Ryo had last spoken to Ueda but it wasn’t as if he hadn’t tried to get the other boy’s attention. After one failed attempt after another, he finally decided on what he thought was the ultimate plan to figuring out what was keeping Ueda from talking, not just to him but in general.

“I want to go back to Ueda’s hometown and find out why he is the way he is,” Ryo answered his friends’ shocked question.

“You’re--you’re crazy, Ryo. It’s like 100 miles away--how the hell are we going to get there?” Jin shook his head, unable to believe Ryo could suggest such a thing.

Ryo smiled and replied, “It’s only about 50 miles away and we can go this weekend; I‘ll drive. It shouldn’t take long--we can go to the mall or a café or something where a lot of teenagers hang out and hope that some of them went to school with Ueda.”

“You know--” Yamapi crossed his arms and leant back in his chair, smiling and looking up before turning back to Ryo to finish his statement, “you’re doing a lot to know about the past of someone you barely know AND you claim not to have feelings for.”

Ryo’s cheeks turned red.

“IT’S--IT’S--IT’S NOT LIKE THAT! I JUST--I--”

“We know--we know, you’re just curious,” Toma laughed.

“Yeah, well--anyways, who’s going with me?” Ryo looked at each of his friends, each one avoiding eye contact with him.

“Toma?”

“I have soccer practice all weekend. We have a big match this week--can’t go,” Toma smiled nervously.

“Jin?”

“My mom wants me to help her move some stuff to my aunt’s house and then I have a date,” Jin blushed and continued avoiding Ryo’s eyes.

Ryo turned to Yamapi.

“And you?”

“I--I--I--oh hell, I’ve got nothing better to do. I’ll go,” Yamapi shook his head as if he couldn’t believe that he was agreeing to go along with Ryo’s weird plan.

Ryo smiled and then turned to look at Jin and Toma.

“Are you two coming or are you going to stick with your fake plans? Jin--I know you don’t have a date and Toma--soccer’s not even in season.”

Toma and Jin looked at each other and then back at Ryo and nodded their heads in agreement.

“Okay--Saturday, we’ll meet at my house in the morning and then we’ll go to Ueda’s old hometown and we’ll find out what the hell is up with him not speaking. Sound like a plan?”

“It sounds like a disastrous plan but I’m willing to help you out,” Yamapi nodded.

Jin and Toma nodded again and Ryo smiled once more.

He went to homeroom after his last class and sat down at his usual seat. Ueda didn’t look as scared as he usually did and instead looked like he was purposely ignoring Ryo. Ryo tried speaking but Ueda wouldn’t listen to him so Ryo just ignored the tension and reminded himself that he would find out why the boy sitting next to him wasn’t able to speak.

The weekend came and soon enough, Ryo and his friends were all piled in a car and ready to make their way to Ueda’s old town to find out about his past. Ryo was feeling very nervous to meet Ueda’s former classmates and friends and he felt like somehow he might end up getting into a bit of trouble. But his heart kept pumping faster and faster and he knew it was the adrenaline kicking in but he didn’t realize it also had to do with the fact that he kept thinking about Ueda.

“Okay, there’s only 20 miles left,” Yamapi said, pointing at a sign as they drove down the freeway, “What are you planning on doing first?”

Ryo, who was driving, paused to think before replying, “I guess we can start at the local high school--and maybe some kids will be hanging out and we’ll work our way through the day until we find out what we’re looking for.”

“You know--this is a lot of work. Did you even think to ask Ueda why he doesn’t talk?” Jin asked, leaning forward in between Yamapi and Ryo in the front.

Ryo sighed, “Of course not, Jin. I just assumed that going through all this trouble to go back to his hometown would be much more convenient. YOU IDIOT! OF COURSE I TRIED ASKING HIM! HE DOESN’T TALK SO OF COURSE HE DIDN’T ANSWER ME!”

Yamapi hit Jin on the head and the other boy squealed in pain. He sat back in his seat and Toma rubbed Jin’s head and made sure he was okay.

“Geez--the idiots I’m mixed up with,” Ryo muttered to himself.

He looked up and there was an exit sign to the city he needed to go to.

“Okay we’re here!” he shouted before turning right and going off the exit ramp and into the city. He drove down several streets, looking a bit lost. He noticed a large group of teenagers sitting outside of a store front and he pulled over into the parking lot.

“Whoa, Ryo, where are you going?” Yamapi asked.

“To talk to those guys--come on, let’s go,” he replied, unbuckling his seatbelt and getting ready to go out.

“You don’t know those guys! They look like a gang--you’re gonna get your ass kicked,” Jin warned.

“Hey, you forget. I’m Ryo Nishikido! I can handle a weak-ass looking group like them with my hands tied behind my back. Now come on,” he opened the door and got out of the car, calling out to the boys.

“Hey!”

The group turned around and one boy in particular looked at Ryo strangely. Ryo walked over, smiling a bit and standing in front of the group.

“Hey, you guys in high school?”

“What’s it to you, old man?” one kid replied.

“Old man?” Ryo looked shocked but then laughed it off, “I’m only 16, kids. Now answer the question, do you guys go to high school?”

The same boy who had looked at Ryo strangely got up and walked over to Ryo, his hands in his pockets and his hair cut short and dyed blonde. His hair was spiked and he had a cigarette in his mouth.

“You guys aren’t from around here, are you?” he said, between puffs.

“Nope--and I’m guessing you are,” Ryo crossed his arms and smiled somewhat mockingly.

“Yeah--we go to the high school down the block. What’s your name, man?”

“Ryo Nishikido--and yours?”

The other boy took out his cigarette and threw it on the ground before stepping on it. He answered Ryo‘s question, “The name’s Koki Tanaka. Who’s the entourage hanging by your car?”

“Those are my friends and those creeps sitting behind you?” Ryo replied.

“My gang--I’m pretty much the leader here but you know, it’s sort of unofficial. You guys have business in our fair little city?”

“We wanna know something--did a kid named Ueda Tatsuya go to your school?” Ryo looked at each boy, hoping for an answer.

“U-Ueda?”

“I’m guessing you know him."

"Yeah--I’ve heard of him. He was in our class last semester--but then he transferred out, no one really knows why except he got jumped towards the end of our first year,” Koki said while taking out a new cigarette and lighting it.

Ryo looked shocked, as did Toma, Jin, and Pi who had walked closer to the group and stood behind Ryo.

“He got jumped?”

“Yeah--apparently, he did or said something that got some guys really pissed off--started a rumor or something and he just got jumped,” Koki said, matter-of-factly.

Yamapi looked at Ryo who was looking down at the floor, his eyes shifting a lot as he tried to process the new information.

“So how is Ueda-kun? You his friends or something?”

“Y-you could say that. Ueda-kun, he actually--” Ryo started but couldn’t finish.

Yamapi jumped in, “He can’t talk.”

“Pi--” Ryo whispered.

“He can’t talk?” Koki choked, “What--you mean he’s like mute or something?”

Yamapi and Ryo nodded as did Toma and Jin. Soon enough, everyone in Koki’s gang, including Koki himself were laughing really hard. Ryo couldn’t believe that they were being so cruel.

“SHUT UP!” he shouted.

Everyone stopped and looked at him.

“What’d you say, man?” Koki asked, looking very threatening.

“I said ‘shut up’, you assholes. Laughing at someone who can’t speak anymore! Are you so fucking heartless?!” Ryo heaved.

“Ryo, come on,” Yamapi pulled at Ryo’s arm.

“Let’s get out of here, guys,” Koki ordered his group, “nothing here worth fighting over.”

The gang left and Ryo looked pissed off. Yamapi and the others stood around Ryo and waited for him to calm down. Just then someone came up behind them.

“Umm--excuse me?”

The foursome turned around and there stood a boy with dark brown hair and bangs that went just above his eyes. He seemed a bit scared to talk to Ryo and his friends and he cautiously approached them.

“Yeah?” Ryo replied, looking suspicious of the other boy.

“U-Uh, my n-name’s Nakamaru Yuichi. I--I can tell you what happened to U-Ueda-kun,” Maru stared at the ground and mumbled.

The four friends looked at each other and they looked back at Maru who still seemed a bit scared.

A little while later, the five of them were standing by Ryo’s car, talking. Ryo sat in the front seat with his door open while the others stood around him.

“U-Ueda-kun and I were in the same class a few months ago--before he transferred out. I--I didn’t know him very well but I remember that he was on student council and he was a very outgoing person. He was always very nice to everyone he met and he enjoyed talking to his friends and to teachers. He was just a really sociable guy.”

Ryo seemed shocked considering that the Ueda he knew hadn’t said a single word since he arrived at his new school.

“There was this rumor that U-Ueda-kun had fallen for one of the guys in his class--someone who wasn’t exactly kind to--to students like U-Ueda-kun.”

Ryo and the others looked a little confused as to what Maru meant by that.

Maru continued, “Anyways, the rumor spread pretty quickly and it spread so fast that it reached the person that U-Ueda-kun had fallen for. Well, he found out that Ueda-kun liked him and word was that the day the rumor spread was apparently the day that U-Ueda-kun was going to confess to the guy he liked. But when he waited for the other guy, he was met by the guy he liked along with a few of his friends. They all ganged up on U-Ueda-kun and attacked him, beating him pretty severely. Luckily he didn’t end up dead or something--he broke a few bones and his face got pretty bruised. He didn’t show up to the school the next day and before we knew it, he had transferred out of our school and moved away.”

Ryo’s mouth hung open and his heart felt like it was breaking. He couldn’t believe what he had heard and had had no idea that the reason for Ueda’s silence could’ve stemmed from a beating.

“Wait, does that mean he’s deaf now? You said he got beaten pretty badly--maybe something--” Jin tried making sense of the story.

“HE’S NOT DEAF!” Ryo interrupted, shocking Jin and everyone else.

“He’s not deaf--he--he--I guess he just isn’t able to talk anymore. I heard from a friend that he was taken to the hospital after the fight and he went into a bit of coma. He woke up several hours later and the doctors and the police couldn’t get him to tell them who had hurt him. His own parents couldn’t even get him to speak. They did some MRIs and other tests and there was nothing physically wrong with him to make him go silent like that. I really don’t know much more--sorry,” Maru hung his head again.

“Do you--do you at least know who did this?” Ryo asked him.

“No one knows for sure--but I believe it was--” Maru cut himself off, looking like he was afraid that he had already revealed too much.

“Well who was it?!” Ryo started to get angry again.

“I think it was Tanaka-kun--the guy you just talked to right now--that gang’s leader. Everyone thought it was him but there were no witnesses and no evidence--and the authorities never did find out who exactly did it. And Ueda going silent didn’t help much either--he didn’t even wanna talk about the fight at all.”

Ryo’s heart stopped. He got up suddenly out of the car and was about to run off.

“Ryo!” Yamapi pulled him back, “Where the hell do you think you’re going?!”

“I’M GONNA KILL THAT TANAKA GUY! THAT SON OF A BITCH HURT UEDA AND NOW HE CAN’T TALK ANYMORE AND--LEMME GO!” Ryo struggled but Yamapi, Jin, and Toma all pulled him back and made him fall back into his seat.

He put his head in his hands and he seemed like he was about to cry.

Yamapi looked at Maru and told him, “Thanks for your help. I think we need to be alone with our friend.”

Maru nodded and replied, “I’m glad to help--I hope that U-Ueda-kun is doing okay. I’ll be going now.”

Maru walked over to where his bike was and got in it. Before he rode away, he turned back and looked at the group who was trying to console Ryo. He smiled to himself and chuckled a bit. He rode off on his bike, out of sight and out of the group’s minds.

The group drove back, with Yamapi in the driver’s seat and Ryo sitting in the passenger’s seat. His eyes were red and he slumped down in the seat, as he stared out the window.

“Hey, Ryo, are you okay?”

“Do I look okay, Jin?!”

“Hey--calm down, Ryo!” Yamapi defended, “You found out what you were looking for and true it wasn’t what you wanted to hear, but you should have prepared yourself for something bad! A person doesn’t just stop talking because of something happy in their lives! It was obvious it had to be something bad! So don’t start taking your anger out on us--we came all this fucking way to help you! Have a little appreciation!”

Ryo wiped the scowl off his face and he took a deep breath.

“Sorry,” was all he said.

The rest of the drive home was relatively silent.

The next morning, Ueda got up and walked down the stairs of his house. He yawned a bit and was startled when his front doorbell rang. He grabbed an apple from the table in his kitchen before heading to the front door. When he opened it, he dropped the apple on the floor and his mouth dropped as well.

“Hello, Ueda-kun, remember me,” the person standing on Ueda’s front porch greeted Ueda.

Ueda looked terrified and the other person just smiled sadistically at the other.

“It’s me, Nakamaru.”
