Chapter 7

“I can’t do it,” Ryo said, as he stared blankly at the mirror in Jin’s bathroom.

He had spent the night as did Yamapi and after a whole night of no sleep, he was beginning to go back on his plan to confront Uchi and Ueda.

“What do you mean you can’t do it?” Jin replied as he stepped out of the shower, dripping wet and reaching for a towel.

“I mean I can’t possibly go through with it. What the hell am I supposed to say to them?! They both said that they loved me!”

“Just say what’s in your heart,” Jin smiled as he dried himself with the towel.

Ryo covered his eyes in disgust before replying, “I don’t know what’s in my heart! I don’t know how I feel! I mean I care about Uchi--I care about Ueda but--”

“You’re not sure if it’s love,” Jin finished.

“Exactly!” Ryo exclaimed. He then sighed heavily, “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I--I just don’t know.”

“Hey! What are you guys talking about?” Pi burst into the bathroom, without knocking and saw that Jin had not finished drying himself off, “OH GAWD JIN--YOU’RE NAKED! LOCK THE DAMN DOOR NEXT TIME!”

Pi ran out and Jin just laughed at him, before taking his towel and firmly wrapping it around his waist. He looked at Ryo who apparently wasn’t paying attention to either one of them.

“Hey,” he said, putting his hand on the shorter man’s shoulder, “just take some time to think about it and then call them both to meet you. There you can tell them how you really feel. I gotta go get my stuff from Matsu--Jun’s office or else he’ll have it thrown out. Good luck and--”

“Jin--do you think I can go with you--to your office?” Ryo asked, out of nowhere.

“What?! Oh hell no--no--no--no! You’re not going because as soon as you do, you’ll flock to him and the two of you will probably have some sort of Shakespearean dialogue and before you know it, it’ll be announced that a 22-year old man jumped out of a window of the building!” Jin babbled.

“What the hell are you talking about?!”

“Never mind--you’re not coming! And that’s that! Ryo--you finally told Jun how you felt--he told you how he felt. You decided you were FINALLY going to move on and there’s nothing more to it. What are you planning to do?”

“I--I don’t know,” Ryo said, looking away.

“Exactly. You don’t know what you’re going to do so there’s no point in going. Besides--I’m pretty sure that today is the day that it’s going to be officially announced about Jun and Mao’s engagement.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“Trust me--I’ve worked for the man for two years. He’s a total sadist--he’ll probably do it just to get back at you for rejecting him.”

“You’re kidding me--Jun’s not that spiteful. That’s not the man I fell in love with,” Ryo remarked with a somewhat smug look on his face.

“Yeah well--people change. You weren’t always the little slut that you are now. I remember back in high school, you were ‘saving yourself for marriage’,” Jin said in a taunting voice, “Then Jun comes into the picture and you can’t stop talking about how he’s going to be your first. And--yeah, I don’t have to tell you the rest since you were there.”

“Whatever,” Ryo turned and went back into the bathroom, “I won’t go. But you’re gonna tell me everything that he says and does when you get back. I don’t want to find out that he married Mao today on the news--I want to hear it directly from you!”

“Okay, fine whatever. I’m gonna get dressed and then I’m off. Good luck with your two lovers--boyfriends--suitors. Whatever! Just good luck!” Jin saluted Ryo and went out into the living room and pretended to flash Yamapi, who groaned in disgust.

“JIN, YOU FUCKING PERVERT! PUT SOME DAMN CLOTHES ON!” Yamapi screamed, hiding his face under a pillow from the couch.

Jin just laughed evilly before he went into his bedroom and shut the door behind him. Ryo shook his head and sighed before looking at the mirror and staring at it as he pondered about what he felt. Clearly there was something there, at least in Ryo’s mind, because he was willing to give up Kame and Tegoshi and Massu as well. But when it came to Uchi and Ueda, he couldn’t bring himself to just simply think about letting them go.

Something was going on in his heart but he still wasn’t sure what it was.

Hours later, and after thinking it over and over again, he called Uchi and Ueda to meet up with him at the same restaurant they had been in a few days before.

He sat in the same place as he had before, across the way from Uchi and Ueda who were sitting next to each other, looking just as anxious and curious as they had been before. He stared at them, making them blush and cleared his throat before saying anything.

“I--” he began but then he stopped because he wasn’t sure how to start.

Both of the other men looked at Ryo, waiting for him to say something and were only disappointed when he stopped talking.

He started again.

“I--I--okay, let me start from the beginning. The truth is--for the past 5 years, I’ve been in love with a man named Jun Matsumoto. I fell in love with him when he was my tutor in high school and I’ve been in love with him ever since. Because he rejected me at that time, I decided never to fall in love again and instead decided to have a string of one night stands and never to have a committed relationship with anyone ever.”

Ryo took a breath before starting up again.

“Up until recently I’ve been seeing 5 different people at once and you two are part of that circle of five. Three of the five men I’ve been sleeping with have ended my relationship with them through different ways. One of them confessed to me and when I told him that I couldn’t return his feelings he decided to move to Tokyo in order to take a job that had been offered to him. The other two were a couple who had been using me as a pawn in their relationship and as a way of spiting each other. Eventually they found out that I was stuck in the middle and they decided to end it with me but not without having a go-away threesome.”

He took another breath and didn’t take too much notice of the looks on Uchi and Ueda’s faces at that moment.

“And also recently I ran into Jun and we started to see each other--until I finally decided to confess to him and not too long after that I found out that he was engaged--to a woman. The woman is the daughter of the president of the company that Jun works for and Jun is in line to inherit the entire company once he marries that daughter of the president. Just yesterday I was approached by the man that I love after I found out that he was engaged, at which point he confessed to me that he loved me as well. But it ended badly because he told me that he wasn’t going to break off the engagement and that if we were going to be together it would mean that the two of us would end up having an affair. I told him I couldn’t do that and basically I told him that I was giving up on him for good and that he would be better off with the company and the beautiful fiancee. Now I’m hear to tell you two how I really feel and hopefully things will work out better for me than they have recently. Now--what do you say? Are you still willing to listen? Or do you feel like walking out on me since technically I’ve been cheating on both of you?”

Ryo winced a bit, expecting Ueda, for one, to bitch slap him across the face after hearing all he had to say. That didn’t happen but eventually one of them spoke.

“I--I don’t know what to say,” Uchi replied.

“I do”, Ueda said, “You’re a manwhore, Ryo. A total and complete manwhore and I have half a mind to kick the crap out of you, right here and right now. And yet--I can’t do that.”

Ryo blinked, “Huh?”

“While I can’t say I am okay with the whole you sleeping with five different guys at the same time--I can say that I can understand where you’re coming from.”

“Wh-what?”

Uchi nodded, “I agree with Ueda. You had a bad heartbreak--with your first love and you couldn’t bear the thought of ever falling in love with someone again. In your own way, sleeping with many men was a way of fixing that wound in your soul--but apparently it didn’t help entirely because you ended up confessing to this--this Jun Matsumoto.”

“I think it takes a lot of balls to do something like that--especially when it’s to someone you got rejected by before. While it’s true that you were lucky to have him return your feelings, I wouldn’t say you’re lucky entirely because the guy’s engaged and worse yet, he had the nerve to tell you that he wanted to keep seeing you even after he was married! What a douchebag!” Ueda ranted.

“Okay--okay. He’s not a douchebag--you forget that I love this man,” Ryo defended while maintaining a calm tone.

“‘Love’? Meaning, you’re not over him?” Uchi asked, with a slight quiver in his voice.

“Well--those kinds of feelings don’t disappear over night! I can’t just say ‘oh yeah, I don’t love him anymore, I’m totally over him’. It’s only been one night, Uchi. It’s going to take a while before I can be fully over him.”

“Then you calling us here--it just means you’re going to reject us, right? I mean, why the hell would you tell us that you love us too? There’s no way in hell that’s even possible,” Ueda argued.

Ryo sighed, knowing that Ueda had a point. But then he said something no one expected him to, including Ryo himself.

“You don’t know that.”

“What?” Uchi and Ueda said at the same time.

“How do you know? It’s certainly possible to be in love with more than one person. Although I’ve loved Jun for so long and I love him so much--I’m on my way to moving on from him--and I think, in a way, I already have.”

“What?! What?! Are you--are you saying you’re in love with me?!” Uchi started hyperventilating until Ueda smacked him in the back of the head.

“He’s not saying that, you idiot!” Ueda rolled his eyes but then he stopped and looked at Ryo, “Wait, are you?”

“I can’t exactly say what I feel--I’m really not sure what it is. But I certainly know that I care about the both of you more than I have for anyone else that I have met since Jun. I’m extremely attracted to you both on more than just a physical level. And I think--over time, I can end up falling in love with one, if not both of you.”

Uchi and Ueda stared at Ryo; their mouths hanging low and their eyes practically bugging out.

But then Ueda came to and replied, “What are you suggesting? Are we going to be your outlet in order to get over your first love? ‘Cause I sure as hell am not going to be the person that you use in order to get over him. I’m sure even Stupid here can agree with me even though he’s practically drooling over you right now. Uchi, wipe your mouth.”

Ueda handed Uchi a napkin and the taller man blushed and sheepishly wiped his mouth.

“Well--with both of your consent, I would like to propose--”

“If you say ‘threesome’, I will kick you so hard, you won’t be able to have threesomes for quite a long time,” Ueda threatened.

“I’m being serious here!” Ryo defended, he then started up again, “I was going to say that I wanted to date both of you--get to know you--without sex, unless, of course, you’re up to it.”

“Oh hell no, if we’re going to be dating, we won’t be having sex until you can make a decision and choose one of us,” Ueda replied.

“I’ll have sex with you, Ryo!” Uchi said in an extremely loud voice that practically echoed within the busy restaurant.

Ueda looked at him before nudging him in the side with his elbow.

“Alright, alright, I agree to the same thing, Ryo. No more sex unless we’re going steady,” Uchi finally agreed to Ueda’s terms.

“‘Unless we’re going steady’?” Ryo laughed, “You’re so cute, Uchi.”

“Ahaha! He said I was cute! Take that, Ueda, he likes me more! You better give up now! He’s never going to choose you!” Uchi taunted the shorter man, even going so far as to stick his tongue out and put his hands behind his head in a childish fashion.

“I’m going to kick your ass, Uchi! You better shut up before I shove this fork up your ass!” Ueda growled, picking up a fork and waving it around until he realized he looked insane.

The two continued to bicker as Ryo just sat back and laughed. He was clearly enjoying the two of them fighting over him and he was happy beyond description that he was finally able to make somewhat of a decision when it came to his love life.

Later that day, he went back to Jin’s apartment and sat on the couch, exhausted after having walked both Uchi and Ueda back to their café so they could start their shifts. The entire way they were arguing with each other and each trying to show Ryo why they were the better choice. Ryo pretended to not be embarrassed by it, even though passers-by were staring at the trio and looking oddly.

He sighed heavily and jumped up when Jin came barging in, looking like he was ready to kill someone.

“What’s with you?” Ryo asked, with an odd look on his face.

“That--THAT--THAT GUY! HE’S--URGH!” Jin grunted.

“Who? Which guy?”

“Jun! He’s got to be the stupidest person I’ve ever met! And he won’t take ‘I don’t know’ for an answer! And--I cannot understand what Mao sees in him. She’s such a classy, beautiful girl--Jun is just--URGH! He’s--”

“Shut up and tell me what happened already!” Ryo jumped from the couch and grabbed Jin, looking very threatening.

“Alright, alright, I’ll tell you,” Jin sighed, “Okay--so I went to get my stuff, right? I go up to the 223rd floor where his office is and I look around and everyone looks scared out of their wits. I asked one of my friends who works on the same floor what was going on and he said that Jun had gone on a rampage that morning because of something that happened to him the day before. So I asked around and apparently he was muttering your name under his breath and pacing around his office like a lunatic.”

Ryo perked up a bit, “Oh really?”

“Yeah--and then the president walks in and everyone immediately gets back to work. He comes up to me and asks me what I was up to and I told him that I was just getting my stuff and leaving the office. But then he’s like ‘No, no, stick around. I want you to talk some sense into Matsumoto because he’s acting insane.’ YOU’RE FRIGGIN’ TELLING ME!”

“And?! And?!”

“Oh yeah, so I’m in his office--Jun’s--and it’s just the two of us and he looks very eager to see me. I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing there and I clear my throat just to tell him that I wanted to leave and he starts asking me all these questions. He’s like ‘What happened after I left? Does Ryo want to see me? I wanted to come by his apartment this morning but I wasn’t sure. Do you think I should’ve gone?’ The man’s insane!”

“Aw, he wanted to know about me,” Ryo smiled sweetly, happy to know that Jun was thinking of him.

“No--wait, there’s more. Get this--I tell him I hadn’t heard from you since yesterday and that you weren’t answering your phone or anything and he actually believed that you were like dead in your apartment or something! So he starts calling your apartment and he’s like ‘Oh my gawd! He’s not answering his phone! He’s probably drowned in the bathtub or something! And blah blah blah.’ Did I mention--HE’S INSANE?!”

Ryo looked at Jin intently, unsure of whether he should laugh or cry or start screaming like a maniac.

“What’d you do then?” was all he could think to ask.

“I told him you were fine--or that I was sure you were fine. He looked at me like I was lying to him! And then he says--out of NOWHERE--‘you and I are going to his apartment, right now!’ So I stare at him to make sure he was serious and he just stared back. I asked him if he was serious and he nodded and told me he was going to take the afternoon off to go see you.”

“What?!”

“Yeah, so we spent about an hour arguing and eventually he dragged me to your apartment and, of course, you weren’t there so he started getting really worried. I didn’t want to tell him where you really were because he might just crack. So I assured him that you were on your way to moving on from him and that he should go ahead and do the same thing.”

“You said that?”

“Yeah,” Jin replied.

“And what’d he say?”

“He told me I was being naïve and that I obviously did not know what it meant to be in love. And then he had the nerve to tell me that he actually thought that Yamapi was unlucky to be my boyfriend! WHERE THE HELL DID HE GET THE IDEA THAT I WAS DATING PI?!”
Ryo didn’t laugh and just thought. He paced around the room before hearing what Jin had to say next.

“This guy is seriously acting like he had never gotten dumped before! Mister-I’m-so-pretty-I’ve-never-had-to-worry-about-getting-dumped! I oughta go down there and convince Mao to marry me! She’d be a lot better off!”

Ryo walked over to Jin and smacked on the back of the head.

“OW! What the hell was that for?!”

“You’re an idiot. Jun’s just actng out because I broke his heart. I can’t say I feel completely sorry for him since it was his fault in the first place. Had he not rejected me in the first place we could’ve had a very happy life togheter. And even if still had, he could’ve at least decided to give up the company and Mao and we could be together right now. But, no he had to be selfish and try and keep both that and me. I will not be shared!”

“Says the man who likes to sleep with 100 people at the same time,” Jin quipped.

Ryo smacked him again.

“WILL YOU STOP DOING THAT?!”

Ryo continued, “I’m surprised he hasn’t tried coming here again. If he was so distrusting of you, then surely he would’ve thought that maybe I spent the night here or something. I gotta be honest, that guy’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.”

“That makes two of you--KIDDING!” Jin put his hands up to guard from Ryo’s inevitable attack and luckily, he was successful at doing so.

Ryo backed up and continued to think before speaking again, “I wish I could just talk to him again. Maybe tell him that all is not lost and no matter what, I will always love him and that I will always be there for him in case things don’t work out for him.”

Jin turned on the TV without thinking but then replied, with a shocked expression on his face, “I don’t think that would such a good idea. Look,” he said before pointing to the screen.

“Hmm?” Ryo turned around and looked and had a very surprised look on his face, “What the hell?!”

Apparently, the news was on and there was a press conference in order to announce that Jun and Mao would be getting married within the coming month.

“At least you know he’ll be alright,” Jin tried making things better for Ryo.

But Ryo just stood there, his mouth hanging open and his hands in front of him in a gesture of total and complete shock.

“WHAT THE HELL?! You just told me he was going crazy looking for me! And--and--and that he was worried about me and that he was acting all mopey and that he still wanted to be with me! WHAT THE HELL, JIN?!”

Ryo threw a seat cushion at Jin, who ducked out of the way.

“HEY! I was telling the truth! I don’t know what the hell happened! I told you--that guy is insane! Apparently, this is his way of dealing with heartbreak and--Ryo! What-what’s wrong? Are you crying?”

Jin rushed to Ryo’s side and stared at the shorter man as he began sniffling and wiping his eyes.

“How could he move on so fast? He told me he loved me and that he wanted only to be with me. How--how could he? How could he?!” Ryo cried before clutching to Jin who was a little surprised but then started rubbing his friend’s back.

“Oh, Ryo--don’t cry. It goes against your role in this friendship.”

“What?!”

“I mean--you’re stronger than this. And a lot more logical--isn’t this what you wanted? If you were going to give up, didn’t you say that you wanted him to do the same?”

“Y-yeah but--I didn’t think it would happen so friggin’ quickly!”

“But, you remember what you set out to do today--weren’t you going to talk to those two guys and tell them something? Did you even end up figuring that out?”

“Huh?” Ryo sniffled but then he processd what Jin had asked, “Oh yeah. I talked to Uchi and Ueda--actually I should start calling them by their first names--Hiroki and Tatsuya. We all decided that I would date both of them and get to know them and eventually I would be able to figure out my real feelings for them and maybe I’d end up fallng in love with one of them--maybe both.”

“Don’t you think that might create problems in the end?”

“HOW THE HELL COULD THINGS GET ANY WORSE THAN THIS?!” Ryo screamed, pointing to the screen with Jun and Mao’s faces on it in order to make his point to Jin.

“I see--” Jin snapped next to his ears to check if he could still hear, “well, if you think it’s best. I’m just surprised that they’d be willing to share you--don’t they know about all your little liaisons with all those guys?”

“Yeah, I told them about it--they were a bit angry but they told me that they could underestand that was my messed-up way of getting over Jun. They weren’t exactly happy but they were still willing to speak to me after I told them so I assume that means they’re okay with it.”

“I see--does this mean that you’re going to have two boyfriends? And--possibly threesomes?” Jin winced.

“NO!” Ryo defended but then he replied in a more calm tone, “They told me that as long as I was dating the both of them, I wasn’t allowed to have sex with them. But with the way they like competing with each other, I assume they’ll try seducing me and I’ll end up sleeping with them both but I will be ordered not to tell the other one,” Ryo licked his lips at the thought.

“Yamapi’s right--you are so going to hell. At least you’re not crying anymore--that’s something.”

“Yeah, I guess it is. Maybe this is just the beginning of something better. Maybe it’ll finally be time for my heart to be mended.”

Ryo smiled and stood heroically while Jin laughed at him and went to sit down on the couch.

Jin smiled but then looked a bit curious, “Hey, are you planning on going back to your apartment anytime soon? You’re kind of making me uncomfortable, you know?”

“WHAT?!” Ryo threw another pillow at Jin who laughed while blocking himself from it.

A few months passed by and Ryo found himself sitting in the café where his two boyfriends worked, reading a letter he had gotten. It was from Kame and it was full of details of his new life in Tokyo.

Ryo smiled as he read it. Apparently, Kame had started dating a new man that he met at work. His name was Koki Tanaka and he was very protective of Kame. The two had been dating for about two months and Kame sounded like he was really in love with his new lover. Ryo couldn’t help but feel elated that the man who had not too long before confessed to him had found someone that seemed to be as in love with Kame as Kame was with him.

“I’m happy for you, Kame. You deserve it,” Ryo thought to himself before putting the letter back into its envelope.

He then turned to look out the window and saw a familiar pair of faces walking by and his heart almost stopped. The pair looked at him and waved frantically before running into the café and greeted Ryo who was sweating a bit.

“RYO!” the pair cried.

“Uh--Tegonyan? Massu? What-what are you two doing here?”

“We were just out for a walk and now we’re here to say hi to the man who saved our relationship,” Tegoshi beamed.

Massu nodded and smiled just as widely as his boyfriend. The couple were hand-in-hand and they looked very much in love. Ryo wiped the uncomfortable expression on his face and smiled at the sight of them.

“So I see you two are in happy terms with one another, am I right?” he smiled.

“Yeah--it was tough at first but after a lot of talking--and a lot of make-up sex,” Tegoshi winked, causing Massu to blush at his boyfriend’s frank statement, “we’ve come to agree on a lot of things. We’re actually planning to go on a trip together next month. So, Ryotan, how’ve you been? Did you ever figure things out for yourself?”

“Huh?! Uh--yeah, I--I’m actually dating those two guys who are mad-dogging the both of you right now,” Ryo pointed to Uchi and Ueda who were leaning on the counter and sure enough, were glaring at Massu and Tegoshi.

“Eh? Ryotan, don’t tell me--” Tegoshi started but Ryo interrupted him.

“No! I actually haven’t slept with either of them since we started dating--I’ve been banned from doing so until I can make a decision between them.”

“Wow--that’s got to be tough. They’re both really--really--really good-looking,” Massu stared but then Tegoshi nudged him, “But no one’s better than my Tesshi!” Massu rubbed his side and Tegoshi had a smug look on his face.

He then looked at his watch and he whispered to Massu, “Isn’t it about time we go back and--you know?”

“Oh! Um--Ryo, we’re going to have to leave now. It’s time for us to--ahh--we’ll see you later! Bye!” Massu grabbed Tegoshi and practically carried him out of the café.

“Bye, Ryotan!” Tegoshi cried as he was being pulled away by Massu who was very eager to get back to his shared apartment with his lover.

Ryo laughed a bit and looked at Uchi and Ueda who looked at him with nothing but contempt. He winked and went back to his business.

Ryo sighed and thought about all that had happened to him over the course of so many months and in one case, so many years. Despite the drama, the heartache, the newfound love, and the unimaginable amount of sex, he hadn’t felt his life was any less empty than most would think. He had two men who were in love with him and would try and fight to the death if they had to if it meant Ryo could finally make his decision between the two. He had two best friends who were willing to do anything for him, even block his memory of any detail about Jun. And he was feeling freer than he had ever been before; he felt that finally it was going to be the start of something much better for him. It truly was the end of a broken heart.

“Hey, wipe that stupid smile off your face,” Ueda interrupted.

“Huh?”

“Yeah, you’re taking us to dinner. Your treat--and unfortunately, you will not be getting lucky tonight,” Uchi added with a sly smile on his face.

Ryo pouted but then he laughed and put his arms around the shoulders of both men and asked, “Where will it be tonight?”

Things had finally changed for Ryo and he was never better.
