Loneliness is an eyesore, but it didn't hit me much all this week. I've spent it watching DVDs non-stop (almost). I've seen most of them before, but it's been ages since I did. It's all about the sixties. I wish you lot can come over, let's all get lost in the fantasy and take pleasure in being idle. (okay I believe I'm the only idle one here)
I was text messaging Elaine while I was watching one of them.
Me: Oi! I'm watching Blow Up and in a bit, Pierrot Le fou! It's been 10 thousand years, now I am reminded why I love these films! Are you at Paul smith?
Elaine: Aww, lucky! While I'm here, eating crappy lunch alone, at a noisy food court!
Me: Well, at least YOU'VE GOT WORK. While I have all the time in the world because I don't. hah!
I shan't go into real reviews as I'll only sound pretentious.
Knife In The Water - Roman Polanski (1962)
This is his first apparently. Very subdued unlike the films that succeeded it.
Pierrot Le Fou - Jean Luc Godard (1965)
One of my all time favourites! I love everything about it. The colours, the actors, the jump cuts, the dialogues, the setting, the songs, tribute to art forms (literature, poetry, art,..). Jean Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina, probably my favourite tandem. I love A Bout De Souffle too, but this gets my vote among Godard films.
Blow-Up - Michaelangelo Antonioni (1966)
Another favourite! Amazing cast (David Hemmings!), The Yardbirds and the tonnes of sixties models! Swinging london and an unresolved mystery.
Repulsion - Roman Polanski (1965)
This still manages to give me the creeps. I love how Polanski shot this film (angles, lighting..) its just CREEPY. Catherine Deneuve is brilliant at being sensual yet terrifying. Now my nephew is going to be forever frightened of hands.
The Dreamers - Bernardo Bertolucci (2003)
It's the only new one among the set, but it's set in 1968 during the student riots in france. It's a big homage to film (French New Wave particularly) as the main characters are a bunch of cineastes who endlessly talk about films. Louis Garrel is beautiful. Michael Pitt is.. well..he's a fine actor.
It would have been complete had I thrown in Peter Sellers flicks. But sadly I don't have any DVDs, bar Casino Royale and Dr.Strangelove. Argh. I want to buy more DVDs. It's addictive.
