For all of you who are living with loved ones with heart disease or incipient diabetes, please follow the link to J. M. Ney-Grimm's blog post cum book review: Why Seed Oils are Dangerous (And What You Can Do About It)

The book reviewed is Big Fat Surprise and while I'm a big fan of Author Gets Paid, so the link goes to amazon.com, odds are good your local library has a copy. Even if they don't, You can see which other library does and get your library to order it from them

Brief quote from the blog post:
VLDL is a genuine villain. Patients with high VLDL-cholesterol also have high triglycerides (another proven risk factor) and are indeed at a greater risk for heart disease. But normal LDL-cholesterol turns out to be another good guy, actively protective against heart disease. And guess what?

When eating saturated fat raises LDL-cholesterol, it’s raising the good LDL stuff, not the bad VLDL stuff. Bottom line? Eating saturated fat raises HDL-cholesterol, which protects against heart disease, and it raises the good LDL-cholesterol, which also protects against heart disease. There is no down side here! Bring on the butter and cream!

The converse is also true, unfortunately. Eating polyunsaturated oils - seed oils such as corn oil, safflower oil, canola oil, soybean oil, etc. - not only lowers the good HDL-cholesterol, but it lowers the good LDL-cholesterol while raising the bad VLDL-cholesterol.

There seems to be a link (definite) between low natural-fat (egg, good quality red meat, cheese) diets high in simple carbohydrates (white rice, pasta, bread, sugar, fruit juice) and diabetes. But there may also be a link to Alzheimers, and statins are also implicated.

I'll post more as I learn more. In the meantime, a great big tip of the hat to author J. M. Ney-Grimm.

And pass it on.
