Myself, I think citizens ought to be able to pray at public occasions: neo-pagan, Christian, Jewish... whatever his or her religion, if someone feels called to pray to his or her Deity (or lack thereof): go for it. But there are the Church-and-State separation fundamentalist who disagree, and plenty of atheists who fear that letting any citizen loose with a prayer at a public occasion is Just Wrong.
Say what you will about former Pres. George Bush's religiousity
at least he didn't require government-vetted prayers.
I'd rather an outright ban on public prayer than public prayers allowed only after a White House censor has had first crack at them.
