Railfans? Anyone? Fic-related Question--

I'm Googling my little heart out, but having trouble tracking down an answer. Can anyone tell me approximately how long it would take to get from California to Mexico by (freight) train?

That would depend on where you were in California. It's a very long state. *g* From Los Angeles to Mexico would take maybe six hours [freight trains are slow]. But I'm not even sure freight trains cross the border, or where.

If you use Amtrak's site, you could probably come up with some decent guesses based on their schedules.

Thanks!

Heh. Sorry. I always think of US States as small, which I'm sure is not terribly fair. ^_^

Los Angeles is the right departure point, so that works. *nod* I've hit Amtrak, but got mostly passenger info, not freight. I've had better luck with Union Pacific, which does ship to Mexico, it seems. Looks like the entry point is Calexic. So now I just need a general timeframe. Six hours, eh?

Freight trains lumber along at about fifty to sixty miles an hour, slower when they are going through towns. But you have literary license and could assume the train is going 60 to 70 miles an hour and never slowing down. *g* The trains are certainly capable of doing 75, but they tend not to as they have to slow down for crossings and so on.

P.S. The states on the east coast are dinky.

P.P.S. I grew up by a Southern Pacific railyard.
