Subtle changes:
1. Book Cara/Kahlan - this means, Cara's eyes are blue and Kahlan's are green. I like it that way.
Kahlan stretched and whined as she opened her eyes, trying to get used to the light peeking through the boarded windows. She yawned and buried her face back in a group of blankets in an attempt to fall back asleep. She had once been known to be a morning person, but Richard stayed awake for most of the night so she did as well. While they were together, she forced herself to stay awake as long as Richard did but she fell asleep before him. Now, she fell asleep whenever she chose...alone.
“Finally, you're awake.” Kahlan jumped at the voice, pulling the blankets up against her as she scanned the room. Everything was in order, but leaning against the wall across from her bed was Cara. She was still dressed in her leather jacket with ripped jeans and what could barely be considered a tank top. It was what she imagined a female wolf would wear, though she hadn't met many. It was customary with Richard's pack that they kept human females around, and it was rare that female wolves stayed with the pack. They joined other males in other packs to invent much inbreeding, as she was told.
“You...were here last night?” Kahlan inquired, loosening her grip on the blankets as she grew more comfortable with the situation. “Did you pick me up off the floor?” Cara nodded, crossing her arms over her chest and grinned. “You looked uncomfortable. Richard said you wouldn't mind sharing the room, I didn't feel like bunking with the men.”
“Oh...yes. I wouldn't blame you. They aren't taken to bathing.” Kahlan's nose turned up at the thought of the stench that often came off of the men that were closer to Richard. From Cara, she heard a small chuckle. She on the other hand, loved bathing and couldn't get enough of being soft and clean. Sliding out of bed, she reached for her leather dress and smiled politely at Cara when she began to change in the corner, facing toward the wall. Breathing deeply, she ignored the fact that Cara might be watching. Kahlan had nearly always been self-conscious about her body, even though Richard complemented her to no end.
As she slipped on the dress and turned around, she caught Cara's eyes leaving her. Blushing again, she said nothing and folded the blankets on her bed. “If you need to sleep, you're welcome to the bed. I have to go see the children.” Kahlan smiled again as she left the room and collected the children.
The children were just as happy to see Kahlan as she was to see them. They ventured out together to check on the ponies and feed them grasses they picked earlier. Kahlan found a few ropes and tied them loosely around the ponies' necks so the children could lead them down to the stream. They behaved well as the children led them and petted them, squealed and prodded them as they walked around.
She felt a great deal more relaxed with the animals around and the children stayed near to her, mesmerized by the animals themselves. After allowing them to drink, Kahlan aided them to sit on the back of the animals as they grazed. Once Kahlan finally gave each child a turn as she led them around on the ponies and they were content, she returned them to the shack.
It took much convincing to get the children to come inside so they could eat. Kahlan had missed several meals, even though it didn't effect her like it should. When she finally found food, she savored it as much as she could before she had children pulling at her skirts to play outdoors again. She did not let her tiredness show, but instead organized a game of hide and seek. She of course, had to seek out each child as they hid around the property. It seemed like it would never end. She delighted in finding each one, sending them back off to the houses to stay together as the afternoon began to fade.
The sun was no longer high in the sky as she began to find a few more children. Soon, she began to grow worried as the sun began to set. She wandered into the woods, fearing she had set too few rules and not counted each of the children that came along. Kahlan could swear she missed one. Calling out as she winded through the trees, Kahlan huffed and continued her search.
More afraid for the children then herself as it started to darken up, she raced through the trees as she backtracked through the wood, careful to not miss a single area. The shadows against the trees made it nearly impossible to be thorough with her search and the daylight was fading all too fast. Kahlan caught the subtle moving behind her, just as Richard trained her to do. She backed away from the noise, stumbling over a root. Clutching the tree it belonged to, she steadied herself.
Kahlan screamed in fear as a tall vampire raced toward her from the shadows, hissing and baring his blood-coated fangs as he approached. She turned and fled, hoping her legs would give her the strength to outrun her enemy. Her back ached as she was flung back against a tree, her arm snapping under the force of the push. The vampire towered above her as she sobbed and covered her eyes. “Please...” Another short scream left her as she felt her ankle twist and a pair of teeth sink deep into her flesh.
Her pursuer was ripped off her leg in a smooth move. She heard loud growling as the vampire tried to plead with the one who rescued her. After a few words in a foreign language that sounded oddly like one sided pleading, she heard a squeal and a heavy thump. Kahlan knew her attacker was dead. A warm coat of fur brushed against her leg and settled beside her, nosing at her side. “Richard?” She whined helplessly as she opened her eyes. Staring back at her were not Richard's dark brown eyes, but a pair of inquisitive blue ones that urged her to try and get up. Attached to them, was a full formed but naked blonde fretting over her injuries. She bit into her arm and pressed it against Kahlan's lips, making her drink before it was too late. “Oh Cara...”
