My Supernatural playlist

Oct 05, 2014 05:30

kalliel is doing a series of posts about her Supernatural playlist, and it inspired me to talk about my own. I have two lists - a list of songs I actually want used on the show, and a list of songs that just seem relevant to the characters for one reason or another.

Songs I want to be used on the show (i.e., 70s songs)

Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Woman (particularly is it over now, do you know how, pick up the pieces and go home, because Saaaaaaaaaam!!! at the end of Do You Believe in Miracles)

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (probably because of this excellent fic by dear_tiger, which you should go read if you haven't already, and yes, it's slash, and I keep saying I don't read slash, but this is some DAMN GOOD slash, people)

Kansas - Dust In The Wind (come on, we need more Kansas, and Dean even quotes this song in Appointment in Samarra)

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (Beelzebub has a devil put aside for meeeeeee!)

Nazareth - Hair of the Dog (mostly because of the chorus, "now you're messing with a son of a bitch," and I want this played at the beginning of 10.01, over the montage of last season, and I want Sam to be the son of a bitch who's being messed with)

Boston - More Than A Feeling (they haven't used this, have they?)

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street (the Foo Fighters remake would be lovely too but it doesn't exactly fit the 70s vibe.)

Songs that just belong on a Supernatural playlist, and if I knew how to make vids I'd use them for a video

Hurt - either the Nine Inch Nails original or the Johnny Cash remake. If you've only heard one version, please listen to both, because they're both so different and both brilliant.

I said elsewhere that NIN's "Closer" is Sam and Ruby's song, and to me, "Hurt" is Dean's song. I mean, just read the lyrics:

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

It could just as easily be Sam's theme song. I can hear Sam saying "I will let you down, I will make you hurt." (Particularly the NIN version - listen to the second chorus and tell me you can't picture Sam singing that.) And the Johnny Cash version makes me think of Dean. Either way, I think it's perfect.

Stabbing Westward - Save Yourself (my life has been a nightmare, my soul is fractured to the bone)

One Republic - Counting Stars (basically what she said)

While we're listening to One Republic, how about Stop And Stare, especially for the line I've become what I can't be (Deeeeaaaan!)
