We’re down to the six most rewatchable episodes of S2, and there were a few surprises.
I really thought there would be more episodes that received a high number of votes. And I thought more than one episode would end up with everybody’s vote. You’d think that if there were one single episode that ALL of us considered one of the most rewatchable, it would be from S2. But I guess not! With 31 total voters, the episode with the highest number of votes only had 26 votes. So, will that episode be the eventual winner? Not necessarily. In the S1 poll, at the end of the first round, Faith was in a three-way tie for 4th place. And it ended up winning (and good on you, Faith, you’re a fantastic episode).
I didn’t expect to see Tall Tales in the top 6. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, I just don’t consider it a standout for this particular season (which, if I haven’t already drummed this into your heads, I consider the best season, hands-down). Is it because of Trickster/Gabriel? Is that why everyone loves this one?
I was also surprised (no, not surprised… amused) that I’m not the only one who considers the last four minutes of AHBL1 to be its own episode. ;-)
So, here we are. The top six. You only get to pick one. What’s it going to be? And remember, if you want to make a passionate speech on behalf of your favorite ep, the comment section would be happy to accommodate you. (Also, send your friends! Even if they didn’t vote in round 1!) ETA... Please vote by midnight (your time zone) Saturday, April 5.
Poll As I’ve said (and said and said, we know already) this is a difficult decision for me, because this season is so good.
In My Time of Dying - Sam is so awesome in this episode. A badass when the demon approaches the wrecked car, even though he’s seriously injured and probably scared out of his mind. Refusing to give up on Dean. Taking none of John’s shit. I love him so much. And Dean, God, Dean. Walking around in that white t-shirt and pajama pants and bare feet, God, that does things to me, you don’t even know, I want to hug him and protect him and I also want to do really naughty things to him. (Ahem. But I digress.) His conversation with Tessa. His face when John tells him about Sam. It’s all so very, very good.
Nightshifter - This episode honestly feels like it’s longer than 42 minutes to me, and not because it’s boring. Because there’s so much good stuff packed into it. Two fantastic guest characters. Boys in suits. Flirty Dean. Serious Sam. The fake-out opening. The glorious ending. This is one of those episodes where I just sat and said “Wow” when it was over.
Born Under a Bad Sign - Oh, hello, what can you even say about this one? Panicky, protective Dean? Check. Worried, guilty, you’ve-got-to-kill-me Sam? Check. Quietly badass Bobby? Check. Evil Sam all up in Jo’s face, “my daddy shot your daddy in the head,” shooting Dean and just generally being all manner of hot? CHECK. Finding out that Sam was possessed by Meg and going back to watch again just to see how beautifully Jared is channeling that character? FUCKING CHECK.
Tall Tales - Like I said, not a standout to me in this stellar season, but so many good moments. Boys wrestling! Slow dancing alien (almost worth a vote just for that)! Bobby talking some sense into their heads! And of course the introduction of everybody’s favorite incognito archangel. Yep, lots of good stuff here.
What Is And What Should Never Be - Okay, even if this were a poorly-written episode, I’d rewatch it on mute, because Sam? Wow. How is he so pretty in this one? Being a law student really agrees with the boy. Mmmm. But of course this is really Dean’s episode, and Jensen sells it. The way he bounces from emotional high (having his mom back, clicking with Carmen) to low (realizing he has no relationship with Sam, finding out that everyone he saved is dead) , and finally having to make that decision - it’s almost as wrenching for us to watch as it is for him to live through it.
All Hell Breaks Loose part 2 - Any episode that starts out with Dean soliloquizing over Sam’s corpse has to be outstanding. Again, this is Dean’s episode (though one of the moments that really grabs me is when Sam asks “Did I die?”) and yeah, he shines. His emotional reunions with Sam and Ellen and John are simply beautiful, but one of the most beautiful moments in this episode actually belongs to Bobby, when he confronts Dean on his deal. Are you that screwed in the head? Yes, yes he is, and we love him for it.
