I enjoyed this ep quite a lot. It's always fun to see backstory, I liked Dean and Castiel coming to a better understanding, and I loved Dean sticking up for Castiel and making it clear that, even if he disagrees with what Castiel does, they are *still family*. After Castiel's declaration of love (basically) in the last episode, I found that quite delightful.

Not sure about the whole 'male angel in female vessel' business. Castiel and other angels have made it clear that they don't have sex or gender, and we've seen angels hop vessels before, so...not sure it was as big a deal as it seemed to you? I just liked seeing Castiel in another vessel, that was fun, and Benjamin finding their soul-mate (so to speak) in a human, when angels historically don't seem to think much of humans...that was nice, too.

Actually, that was kind of my point. It's not a big deal. Angels are genderless, and Cas, Raphael, and Hannah have all been shown in both male and female vessels. But I just felt like the show was trying to prepare me to see a "male" angel in a female vessel, like I needed to be shown that was possible. Maybe I'm overexamining it.

(And let's ignore that these genderless angels refer to each other as brother and sister...)

Huh. I really didn't notice that, but, oh well! So long as it didn't ruin the ep, it's all good. :)

I always figured they did that out of respect for the vessel/in lieu of trying to find some genderless-but-means-family word/because the whole brother/sister thing is a Xian thing. But who knows.

They've had a few seemingly unnecessary expository bits is the last couple of seasons. I wonder if it's because they have gained a whole lot of new viewers who may not be caught up on past episodes?

Strangely, I didn't find this a particularly Cas-centric episode, maybe because actually the main story was Lily's rather than Castiel's, and maybe that's why I enjoyed it better than other Cas-centric episodes we've had. Plus the boys were woven into the story too, and it didn't feel too clunky, even with the flashback. So props to the new writer, because I think he did a decent job on this one!

That thing about angels becoming 'close' to their vessels was odd - it implies some sort of happy sharing of the body which we have never seen, even with Cas and Jimmy. The closest we got to implying that is possible was Sam managing to take control for that brief moment in Swan Song and that's hardly indicative of co habitation over possession. I wonder where (if anywhere) they might take that one.

And they made a pretty big deal about it. I feel like it's going to come up again.

I actually was surprised at how much I enjoyed the episode. Definitely felt like it would make the Destiel fans happy, but what the hell, they deserve some joy too. Man, have I missed asshole angels like Uriel back in the day. I would love more of them calling humans monkeys and primates ( ... )

I know, right?

But why didn't Castiel and his close flight notice that one of their members was missing being a creepy angel stalker?

They also seemed pretty chill about a human being able to summon one of them.

And you're probably right about the source of Dean's grumpiness!

(I notice she has two angel blades on her desk. So, either she had quite the collection to begin with, or someone forgot she lost one. Let's say it's A.)

Well Isham and Mirabelle did say two other angels from their flight had been killed before Benjamin and they hadn't told Cas because they didn't think he'd care, so maybe Lilly was collecting Angel swords after she killed an angel? With the idea that you can never have too many?

Too bad Cas and his recently-revealed lie detector abilities aren't handy.

Cas lost those pretty quickly, being unable to tell that Kelly was lying when she said she had to go to the bathroom, so I suspect his lie detecting abilities will not be seen again.

Because let's face it, the survival rate of redheads on this show is almost as bad as that for people of color.)

At least Lily survived and I suspect Rowena will outlive the cockroaches, who will survive the Apocalypse.

And, okay, we've seen a nephilim before. She wasn't dangerous. She was a waitress, for Christ's sake.

Male angels can have ( ... )

Yes, it has always been true, that angels are not limited to one gender of vessel. But I just felt like Show wanted to make sure I knew that, for some reason. Maybe it's just me.

Good point about Cas and the nephilim, although I think she did attack him first, so it could be considered self defense. (She attacked because she figured out they were going to kill her, but still.)
