Dammit.

It's not fair. While Jon Carroll was away on vacation, he managed to do something I've been dreaming of for almost a year now, but have yet to achieve. I'm not bitter, but Jon Carroll made it on to Bill O'Reilly's enemies list. Those media types get all the breaks.

Jon Carroll did something I dreamed of, years ago. When I was a rhetoric major at Cal, with dreams of going to journalism school, I planned to graduate, get a job reporting for, oh, a couple of years, develop good opinions, and write about them. I would be wise, and funny, and be a COLUMNIST, which was just eighties-talk for blogger, right? Columnists have higher salaries, though. I just knew this would happen. I'd be at that point right about when Charles McCabe, the Chronicle's long-time irascible old codger retired.

Then McCabe went and died, before I was ready, and Jon Carroll took his place! I was so pissed off, as Carroll was young, and it would be decades before the Chron had another spot where I'd fit. Grrr ( ... )

It's probably because you've got me taking the role of the Angry White Male in non-arguments with sylphslider, so he thinks you're "fair and balanced." Sorry.
