title: divine intervention
pairing: baekhyun/kris/chanyeol
rating: pg-13
genre: mild!romance, college!au
warnings: religious themes
summary: park chanyeol is god, byun baekhyun is a frustrated philosopher, and wu fan is baekhyun's (not-so) friendly agnostic colleague.

when the world was created, everyone knew a certain higher being started all this.

a higher being named park chanyeol, to be exact.

of course, no one knew that. they simply called him god, it all depends on whether they'd like to acknowledge his existence or not. either way, chanyeol isn't bothered by how people want their religious views to be. besides, he gave them the free will to do so, anyways.

in the free will byun baekhyun was given, he's spent most of his time reading on philosophical articles and arguments that might account for the true existence of god - or at least a higher being he can account for his existence.

baekhyun wasn't going to try arguing for or against the topic, even though his colleagues kept pestering him to at least get himself involved in a heated debate between himself and his professor.

meanwhile, chanyeol could see all this as if he were watching every person's point of view in a main control panel. chanyeol giddily watches baekhyun from up above and sees how the man on the surface tries to evade the countless requests from his colleagues. it's not that baekhyun's worried that he might lose, he's afraid that at least the mindset of affirming or negating the existence of god might be deeply planted in him after the debate, therefore defeating every chance he'd been giving himself in getting a proper stance on the issue.

it was until one day one of baekhyun's colleagues in particular decided to have a chat with him and his indecisive faith.

wu fan, baekhyun knew the taller man screamed agnostic all over. not that baekhyun hated the older man for it, wu fan was always quiet in class. not knowing the other man was ahead of baekhyun by a landslide, with his carefree religious view which was clearly not a hindrance to him and his rare inputs during discussions that set him apart from the rest of baekhyun's colleagues who are merely attending the class for the sake of posterity.

wu fan decided to meet up with baekhyun over coffee, which would give both of them more then enough time to talk over baekhyun's innermost thoughts on their class.

baekhyun doesn't even realize how many shits wu fan really gives and fails to think wu fan just wants to see what he has to say, and throw everything that he's heard into the trash - figuratively speaking, at least.

however that doesn't stop baekhyun from incessantly throwing out arguments which wu fan could care less about, but he's intrigued how one man could go so far in his faith to question the man who's started it all.

wu fan finds it ironic that as much as you'd like to fill yourself in with the knowledge of the existence of a higher being in order to successfully defeat all those who think there is no god at all, you can't because such limits to human knowledge exist, whether baekhyun likes that or not.

"don't you ever get tired of talking about this?"

"wu fan, do you really want me to answer that?" baekhyun takes a large gulp off his glass of water, wu fan succeeding in stopping baekhyun from ever continuing his discussion, giving the younger man a much needed break from all the talking.

wu fan's stern expression only meant a "no" for both of them, it was easy for baekhyun to catch up on wu fan's attitude, needless to say.

the coffee chat went on without added conversation, somehow baekhyun realized that wu fan was already bored in class as it is, he didn't want the other man to be bored much further with his own discussion.

--

baekhyun decided to spend at least an hour of his free weekend to visit a nearby chapel. it felt quite unnatural for him to step inside; with the walls intricately designed; the windows stain-glassed to depict the important events in the life of christ; and with the place barely filled with people, baekhyun felt so serene for once.

the frustrated philosopher was at loss for words at how beautiful their chapel actually was. he never thought of attending mass ever not because he thought it would be too boring, but he's always thought that it would be much more preferable for him to be out doing good deeds rather than participating in mass for an hour and throwing all the morals he's picked up as soon as he leaves.

baekhyun was never a man of morals, but he knows a good deed when he sees one.

he knows enough to genuflect before the altar and kneels down to say a little prayer.

he finds himself on the last pew, just before the doors. with no one else inside the chapel, he feels oddly weird being alone but still he's always wanted to do this for quite sometime and he won't mind looking like a pathetic loser.

to each's own, baekhyun thinks, people have their own way of worship.

at first, baekhyun wonders if there's a proper way to address the only man before him. although he thinks that as long as he treats the creator just as anyone else would treat him, he should do just fine.

"hi," baekhyun begins. he's surprised he's actually saying it enough for himself to hear rather than keeping it all in his head.

"i'm pretty sure you've seen me run around the college campus endlessly and try to ignore my colleagues' incessant pleas of going on a debate against our professor."

"you also knew that i went out with wu fan just a few days ago to discuss my stance on the topic, which i'm sure you knew, and it ends up that wu fan seems to dislike me more after that meeting."

"then again, i'm not surprised that he does, anyways."

"it's funny since a part of me thinks you don't exist, then again if i believed that, there must be something wrong with me right now. it's as if i'm convinced that you can actually hear me on the other side of this conversation."

"us humans fail to believe that you actually exist because all you do up there is watch and listen. you gave us humans free will just so you could see what we can do after what has happened in the creation of the first ones."

"what happens in the end? no one knows for sure, anyways."

"on top of all this, i'm pretty sure you know what my problem was, and has always been."

baekhyun thinks he's said enough, he doens't want to end up giving too much attraction even though the chapel remains empty ever since he's started his soliloquoy with the creator.

he departs from the chapel without revealing to the other end of the conversation what it was that baekhyun really wanted.

i'm not looking for a solution to my problem, i just want to understand and realize what i truly believe in.

--

chanyeol knew baekhyun was right about everything he's said, he's knew all of those simply because he watched and listened from above.

he also knew what baekhyun really wanted, so he figured he'd help him realize that.

--

baekhyun attends the college again for his class on the existence of god. after his experience in the chapel, he wasn't sure whether he was ready to take on whatever philosophers had to say on the topic.

"we have a new student who will be sitting in during the duration of the semester," his professor begins, quite a rare introduction to start the class.

"hi, everyone, i'm park chanyeol. i hope we'll all get along well." the man being introduced was tall, thin, and had messy hair, but his teeth were too radiant for baekhyun to stare at.

baekhyun thinks his prayers might have been answered. how? that's the part he's yet to figure out.

a/n: what is this, really. osdfnsdughs oh, for clarification purposes, agnostics are people who neither believe god exists or the otherwise, in other words, they suspend judgement on the issue.
