Religion in the 21st century

Tom Lehrer once said: Among the things they did in an attempt to make the [Roman Catholic] Church more... commercial was to introduce the vernacular into portions of the Mass to replace Latin, and to widen somewhat the range of music permissible in the liturgy. But I feel that if they really want to sell the product in this secular, age what they ought to do is to re-do some of the liturgical music in popular song forms.
The Church has taken this on board today.

Archbishop Louis Walsh's stated policies include:
  • introduction of Pope Idol to replace the traditional Papal election
  • heckling of other judges priests during sermons
  • putting christening of babies to a congregation-wide vote, with the bottom two babies having to compete in a cry-off
  • choir-boys will sing Abba songs in tight white t-shirts, while swaying on stools with a microphone.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sharon Osbourne, sent her good wishes to her rival, saying "I know he'll take this role and make it his own."
