The really nice thing about not having a full time teaching job yet is that when I hit 9pm and sore eyes and have been teaching or grading or cooking or driving to dance lessons since 6:30am, I can decide that I am done for the night. Yes, I still have outlines to grade ASAP and students to email tomorrow and papers to grade by Friday and two lessons to plan, but I can start again in the morning. I'm so grateful to be able to get a reasonable night's sleep Tuesday night.
And then every now and then I think about people who watch TV at night because they don't feel obliged to work every waking hour. I hope they feel really lucky and grateful. And I think about people who work two or three jobs and aren't even home for a good night's sleep, much less to make Pasta e Fagioli with Spinach for dinner and banana oatmeal bars for breakfast, whose kids have to get themselves off to school without breakfast and who can't take their kids to tap dance and choir on a Tuesday afternoon and evening. I hope they know that I appreciate what I have and am thinking of them and sending, at least in my thoughts, an hour of my rest their way.
