The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason. That one you should read because it has a really engaging storyline, it's based at least partly on true events, it makes you think, it creates a strong sense of empathy and attachment to characters and is incredibly suspenseful in a great way. It's got a great love storyline, a great friendship storyline and it deals with a huge mystery of the Renaissance. It will make you want to go out and learn more about the subject. And you should read it because I couldn't put it down and that's the most recent time I've found a book like that.

If you're looking for a more easy read, try The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. It's marketed as a young adult fantasy novel but it's beyond spectacular. The first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, it incorporates all sorts of fantasical elements and is incredibly realistically told, and it gets even better later in the series. It's also a retelling of John Mills' (I think it's Mills) epic poem, Paradise Lost. It's spectacular.

If you're looking for poetry, try Sappho. We get the word lesbian from her homeland in the isle of Lesbos and her poetry completely resonantes with incredible beauty. There are sad poems and passages and heartsick ones, but they are told so honestly they can't help but touch you. I've never come across another poet who so immediately struck a cord with me. Another poet to try is Robert Frost, but I'd recommend Sappho ahead of him. One of the original poets. Beautiful beyond my powers of description.

Hope I've given you some ideas. :)
