The Grand Finale

Dec 06, 2004 20:11

Tomorrow marks the single largest media event I will ever support in my time as a public affairs officer in the US Marine Corps. There will be more than 200 press in one tiny spot on our big, big base. And I will be running around trying to keep track of every one of them.

What's the big deal? Maybe you've heard it on the news.

The president will be visiting us here at Camp Pendleton for the second time in his term as president. A little history lesson: President George W. Bush is the first president since Lyndon B. Johnson to visit Camp Pendleton. Bush is also the first president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to visit Camp Pendleton twice while in office.

I will be frank. The president is our commander-in-chief, the highest rank in our military. He has shown more support for us in the military than many others before him. The military is vastly pro-Bush. We are honored by his visit and look forward to hearing what he has to say. Despite what your personal feelings are, the fact that he is visiting us tomorrow is important to all of us who have deployed once, twice, maybe even three times in the past few years to recognize our sacrifice and our accomplishments. If that is what boosts my Marines' spirit and keeps them strong in the fight, then that is 100% okay no matter how you feel about him.

I can't think of a better way to finish these last few weeks here with the 1st Marine Division.
