[Juliet is working on some sort of sewing project, sitting by the window in the main room of the Capulet house. She concentrates fully on the purple fabric, not looking up to speak.]It has been six months since I arrived to this city. Six months to the day. During such time, I have gained and lost family, made very dear friends, and found myself ( Read more... )

Six months. You have a month on me, Madame.

[She smiles to see Lord Duroc's face on the little screen.]

And would you consider this a good thing or a bad, Lord Duroc?

You have been well, I trust? Have you enjoyed all of the apples with which we were blessed this last week?

That's a difficult question, isn't it?

Mireille has taken quite a shine to them, at least. I'm not much for fruit.

Perhaps. It depends on one's perception of one's time here.

[That makes her smile more.]

Fruit will be good for the baby, of course. Nanny said my Lady Mother ate many oranges when I was in the womb. Father had to have them shipped from Naples and Campania for her. I am sorry you have not found them to your liking, though, given the sheer volume of apples we have had.

[He smiles at her small anecdote, but refrains from commenting on it.]

How do you feel about it? Your time here?

[She is glad to see him smile. She knows he has been very busy as of late.]

I do not begrudge it. I enjoy the independence I have, and learning so many new things. And I am glad for the friends I have made. More than glad. I would wish for it to be happy always, but I know it cannot be such. Even in the difficult times, there are good things which come about. Would you not agree?

I would. [Pause.] I think, in this place, the biggest danger is wasting time. Half a year is a long time to do nothing.

I would not consider my time wasted these last six months, Lord Duroc. I have learned a great deal. There is very little time in which I am idle.

Oh, I wasn't implying anything against you, Madame. I'm sure you're happy with what you have achieved.

[She smiles.]

I am.

Are you not happy with everything you have done in your five months here, Lord Duroc? You have helped us a great deal, and you are working on that wonderful police force - a truly noble cause, and one I am glad to see taking shape.

Thank you. Satisfaction isn't generally something I strive for, but I'm glad you approve of our efforts.

You are most welcome. I fail to see how anyone can disapprove of such a thing. It will benefit many people.

It's change. Some people will always find it uncomfortable.

Even though it is a change for the better?

No improvement without sacrifices, right?

It could be argued so. It depends on how one defines sacrifice, does it not?
