What he says: It’s just a show I should really just relax

What he means: Professor Bobo clearly held contempt for his culture; while his initial interactions with Mike were largely him looking down on humans (and the bots) as “unevolved”, it becomes apparent almost immediately that he believes ape culture to be less civilized than he says. He ( Read more... )

I have so many thoughts about Bobo that it's kind of ridiculous. Like I have thoughts about the others? But Bobo blows them all out of the water.

(I also have thoughts of Brain Guy choosing Earth because he'd really fallen in love with all the options there- the food that was edible and delicious, the people who were so varied, the chance to experience things instead of just observing them all the time... it took next to nothing for Pearl and Bobo to persuade him to stay because he didn't really want to go to begin with.)

You have amazing Bobo thoughts!

Ooh, yes! He'd love that!

He likes Pearl because her personal brand of cruelty meshes so well with his own (when it's not being pointed at him). He wanted to stay with Pearl and Bobo after the experiments ended because he really liked being around them, he and Bobo had at that point bonded really well and he liked hanging out with Pearl too. He's conflicted about his planet and people being destroyed and the last of his civilization living as raging Packers fans in Wisconsin because on the one hand, he loved his people and home and they'd been his friends for ages, but on the other he never would have gone to Earth if it hadn't happened, and he feels guilty for thinking that sometimes.

Also, he's gay, and while he never had a problem with that, one comment from Pearl made him reluctant to let her know, so one of his first experiences living among humans was diving into the closet. A very, very transparent closet.

Ooh, complicated!

And yeah, even if one doesn't internalize it, "People in this place disapprove of your sexuality" can lead to awkward closeting.

He's like, he loves it on Earth! But he had to lose everything he'd ever known to get there, and sometimes he even thinks it might have been worth it. And while he certainly has no qualms about killing for personal gain, he does have his lines. So he feels massive amounts of guilt over how not bothered he is by the destruction of his planet sometimes. (Feelings are complicated, especially when you've always been part of a thought collective and suddenly find yourself in silence.)

Mostly I think he's gay because of a comment he made when he took some condoms off of Bobo- "My many lady friends will appreciate my caution". The way he stressed the word "lady", in this particular context, sounded like he was trying to convey the idea that he totally likes ladies no really (rather than a sense of "I totally get laid, no really").

Yeah, there's a difference between the death of one person who's in your way and the death of your entire civilization and society.

Yeah, that's totally a "I date ladies who are female and definitely not dudes!" line.

Of course! And he isn't really happy about it, or think it's worth it, but like I said, feelings are complicated, and sometimes you deal with grief by wrapping yourself in the bright side.

Especially as he hesitated before saying "ladies".

Yeah, since it's happened and there's nothing he can do about it, it's easiest to focus on the good bits.

"My many...lady friends! Absolutely not Todd who works at the gas station! Ladies!"

And he did mourn when they all passed, and was clearly still effected by it later, so it's not like he just dismissed them all "-Yzma voice- Well, they ain't getting any deader!" He grieved and found a way to cope and then decided to move on with his life instead of dwelling, and wrapped himself in the bright side and decided to enjoy his new life and everything it had to offer.

"I've never been to a gay bar! Not me, never!"

Yeah, he's legitimately making the best, not burying it.

"I have not set foot in that nice place with the rainbow sign in the center of town, and absolutely do not recommend their appletinis."

And defeating his buddies was a legitimate attempt to save his new home, which brought up a lot of new conflicting and confusing feelings that he had just been getting over.

"I have never gyrated to pulsing music while a man named Steve ground his crotch on my ass."
"Okay, that one was really really specific."

Also, re your Shark Teens comments:

Ugh, no, clothes over wetsuit? The worst. Like it's not like wearing a swimsuit over clothes, it's thick and dripping and just a nightmare.

This was meant to be setting up a joke about Keahi just not wearing shirts (it's gonna come up later that he doesn't wear a shirt under his hoodie) but I can always either edit it or throw in some regret when they're biking back later and he forgot to consider that and is just like "my entire existence is suffering".

Stasney, do you need like a chart of stuff not to say to girls? Because "You can't be pretty, you don't wear dresses" would be on it.

Stasney's really dumb.

So many feelings!

"And I'm not just saying that because he prefers to go by Steven!"

He would definitely regret the wetsuit. If he's biking back in a damp wetsuit with cargo pants over it, he is going to be so "Why did I do this?"

"I don't know how emotions work, I'm used to being part of a thought collective! There's usually at least a dozen other consciouses around to smother emotion under."

The others dry pretty quickly cause regular swimsuits plus warm sun, and Keahi's just like "I am filled with regret and seawater."

"And also, if I want someone to understand something, I have to actively decide to tell them, and then I have to find words! Every single time!"

Layer of water-retaining clingy foam+layer of thick fabric+bicycle-riding=such a bad idea, Keahi.
