Quantum Entanglement

Eve watched Adam as he drifted in and out of sleep. She had woken alone only to find her husband asleep on his outdated velvet couch, surrounded by his beloved guitars. When she had first arrived in Detroit the brokenness of the city had surprised her, but Adam was attracted to despair just as she was drawn to hope and life. He was her darkness and she his light pulled together through time and space and inseparable. Despite being a part from one another for the past century she could feel her connection to him just as strong as it was the day they met. Nothing happened to him without her knowing even across the oceans and continents. Adam had told her once about quantum entanglement and how even at a great distance, a pair of particles that were intimately connected could react to each other. Whatever happened to one the other would react to counter. Einstein had called it "spooky action at a distance". Eve thought it rather romantic.

The television behind her played an old documentary about the evolution of single-cell organisms. It was probably a tape of his own and only used to distract him when sleep was allusive. Adam's head was nodding as he fought to stay awake, his eyes mostly closed. Eve only noticed the thin stream of light that had crept in through his thick curtains when he startled himself and his hand moved across the back of the couch and into the sunlight. For a moment she held her breath as she watched him yank his hand back and cradle it against his bare chest.

"Fuck," he cried as he shook his hand as if it would help the burn to heal faster. Before he even realized that she was there, Eve was sitting beside him with his wrist gripped gently in her own hand. She kissed his forehead and then the healed skin.

"You should know better than to be down here at this time of day," Eve admonished him.

"Didn't want to sleep," he mumbled as he rubbed his eyes. "I keep having strange dreams."

"About Ava?"Eve asked quietly. She did not want to admit that she and Marlowe had had similar dreams pertaining to her sister. Her company was very much not desired.

"How did you know?"

"Psychic," she laughed and kissed him. "She cannot know that we are here."

"When the hell has that ever stopped her? God I do not want to deal with another incident because of her. What if she does come here and something happens? I'll have to leave again and start over."

"You could always come back with me to Tangier. Marlowe hasn't seen you in so long and the atmosphere would do you well. Your music has suffered here even if you won't admit it." Adam sighed and pulled Eve until she rested her head in his lap. She really should have closed the gap in the curtains, but the dust particles dancing in the light were mesmerizing.

"I will not leave unless it absolutely necessary." Eve wanted to smack him but it would accomplish nothing. Adam was simply not ready to return and she would not force the issue. After all, it was usually her that traveled to him and not the other way around.

"If I sing for you will you come back to bed? It's too early to be up and I want to go out tonight. I'm sure there's someplace you could take me." She felt Adam's breath across her face as he laughed and ran his fingers through her long hair. It had once been beautiful and vibrant, a golden colour that he would write songs about, but it had frayed over the years just as his had. She reached her hand up to brush his black hair away from his face, his blue eyes staring down at her.

"Can you tell me about Stonehenge and your people?" Eve snuggled further into his multicoloured-striped dressing gown.

"My people came after Stonehenge Adam. Did I not tell you this already?" Adam shrugged his shoulders.

"I was just thinking about it and some of the details were a bit fuzzy." Eve stretched her legs out and sat up.

"Then take me to bed and I shall tell you a story. Will that appease you?" Adam smiled and stood quickly with Eve held tightly in his grip. He was careful to maneuver around the sun streaming in through the curtain and make his way to the stairs. Eve wanted to make a comment about the mess and clutter that made walking almost impossible, but she knew he was a collector of old technology and anything music related and if it made him happy than how could she argue with it.

"Later I will have to leave and a get a fresh supply of blood, but I'll be back in time to take you out, I promise."

"As long as I am with you we could visit a garbage dump and I would be happy." Adam walked into his room and placed her on the bed before stripping and huddling under the covers.

"Detroit has as much of a social life as I do, so I can't promise much," Adam's voice was muffled by the comforter. Eve just rolled her eyes and nestled down beside her husband, content to just be near him for the moment.

"When was the last time you washed the sheets?" she asked. Adam was quiet for longer than necessary.

"A year ago, but it's not like they need to be washed every week." Eve really wondered how he could survive so long without her, but yet again it's not like he needed to eat and sleep regularly, though it did help. At least he had a blood supply that was uncontaminated, a rare commodity that was sorely needed. Humans were not just polluting their environment, but also their own blood.

"I find newly washed sheets help me sleep, maybe you should try it some time." Adam merely closed his eyes and rubbed his nose along her neck before kissing her shoulder.

"You promised me a story," he pouted.

"Alright," Eve uttered as Adam snuggled closer. She wouldn't be surprised if she woke up later with him wrapped around her. "Stonehenge was not built in the sense that most believed, but assembled with stones brought from Wales."

"How?"Adam mumbled.

"If you interrupt me I can't tell the story," Eve warned him even as she wrapped her arms around him. "As I was saying," she began again. "The stones came from Wales and they were rolled along these wooden logs---." Adam had fallen asleep faster than she had thought he would. He must have been more tired than he wanted to admit. Well she was there now to look after him and to love him like he deserved. Perhaps she would buy him a new instrument, a rare and beautiful one just like him. Tangier had many unique instruments and surely one would fit perfectly with him. She smiled and rested her head against his humming a tune that he used to play for her.
