We have been fortunate enough to have had song thrushes nesting either actually in our garden or nearby for many years. They are much appreciated for their snail culling skills plus their individual musical virtuosity. Two years ago we had one that regularly reproduced something akin to several bars of a recognisable Mozart aria from The Marriage of Figaro.
I suppose it had to happen eventually, but this year unfortunately we have been playing host to a melodically challenged thrush whose best territorial efforts sound like a whooping monkey. Am retaliating by playing lots of Mozart in the hope that this year’s young will want something better than their tone-deaf dad to emulate. Today I am treating them to birdcatcher Papageno from The Magic Flute... Perhaps a lesson in how to attract a mate also!
