Although it initially sucked majorly when my doctor said I couldn't eat sugar for several months (& sucked to INFINITY in the detox/withdrawal phase) this has actually been a rather excellent excuse to experiment more with healthy alternatives in cooking. Granted, my parents have long since tried to obstruct me from my kitchen adventures, but now especially they are letting me go wild. I am deeply, deeply appreciating the versatility of sugarless cooking because now I'm not playing with simply cookies or chai or other knick-knacks of the food world; it's important for my survival next semester! It's been thoroughly fun discovering equally good- in fact often better- food substitutes & methods for cooking.
I didn't even realize till afterwards, but I actually prepared almost the entire dinner tonight for my family & some family friends: a quite intensive veggie/rigatoni casserole, salad & homemade dressing, and... well the bread came from a bakery & the wine from a bottle... but still. And then hot chocolate. Ohh, drink of the gods, surely. Since hot chocolate is one of my favorite things in the world, I've put extra emphasis on the pursuit of a decent substitute. You could say, it's a critical and urgent condition in the final stages of development. It turns out that a combo of soymilk, whole milk, unsweetened cocoa, and stevia leaf powder on the stovetop makes a freaking delicious mug o' charm & satisfaction. The secret ingredient, of course, is a particular blend of liqueurs... I spiked a 17 year old's mug of this, uh, magical brew, stronger than his mom's, much to his delight.
I'm so, so excited to cook more next semester. Way pumped. Heavens I'm so glad we have such a nice kitchen in our school apartment (even the squirrel visitors would testify as such, eh roomies?). Next year during my time off from school, I want to take nutrition or cooking or especially ayurveda classes so badly. Can't wait.
And thus I present your nightly ramble du jour (but mostly minus the du jour part).
Oh, and we (the other kid & I) watched Apocalypto tonight while the grownups were watching the football game (yes, I'm a bad New Englander when it comes to non baseball sports *shrug*). The film had sweet action & plot, but a touch bloody. Oh, yeah, and may I express some concern for the graphic things coming from Mel Gibson's imagination?? Impressive but sick!
