This I believe
What I believe is the power of the goodness of people, individually and in groups. This may seem like a very trivial view to some, I mean we all believe in good. But that’s not what I mean. I believe that people are good and are creatures that desire to do acts which help their fellow man. It’s so easy to be cynical anymore and see only the problems in others, or the follies in the world. This I believe is an incorrect view of the world, and I have good reason to feel so.
Good people seem to be in the minority because of what we view, but it just takes a quick look around to see that is false. Doctors, firemen, police; these people spend their lives trying to make mine and yours better. When my father had cancer many doctors were involved in treating him. None of these people knew him personally before hand, yet they spent months trying to heal him. Why would someone do that? Why spend all that time and effort trying to save someone’s life that you don’t even know? Of course they make good money but I believe there must be an enormous amount of underlying desire to do good in the world that made these doctors do what they do.
But the have doctors were not the only ones who helped with the whole ordeal of my father’s cancer. I remember the days I would sit in the waiting room while my dad went in for chemotherapy and how kind the secretaries were to me. They would laugh and talk to me; offer me some candy from the bowl on their desks. They didn’t need to act like that, it’s not in their job description to make kids feel better as their parents are treated for diseases, but yet they did. It’s like holding a door open for someone, though it’s not required of you, it’s a nice thing to do. It shows that you are considering another person besides yourself which can be hard anymore.
I have always believed that people on the whole want to be good. I believe that it is very easy to be pessimistic when things aren’t going your way but you have to hold out and wait for the good times to come again. I believe that everyday you and I can do something good that will impact someone else's life, if even for a very short while. I also believe that if we all believe in goodness and what it can do for all of us it would make us and the world we live in a much better place.
