It is said that inside every person, there is a heart of gold. This is usually said by the optimistic, naive, or those with the survival instinct of a lemming in a tornado.

The problem was that even if it was true, there were just some people you tried to superimpose a mental image of a 'heart of gold' or 'hidden depths' over, and it just did not work.

Diamonds Droog may have been somewhat of a charmer, but his unnerving talent for cold-blooded murder and his complete lack of positive emotion more than made up for it once people got to know him.

Not many people got to that stage. In fact, nobody actually had. Any 'friends' he made had a distressing tendency to eventually get on his bad side somehow, and suffered regular cases of head trauma, brutal beatings, and eventually death. It was a shame.

At least, Droog would have said it was a shame if he wanted friends. He'd never gotten very attached to people; yes, he had a sort of bond with the other members of the Crew that could have passed for friendship in a very poor light, but that was about it.

And then, after a fair amount of wandering, he'd found a control station, and...this girl. Aradia.

(It may have been surprising to some that Diamonds Droog did not hate trolls any more than he hated other Dersians, or, say, the Felt on a good day. It was hard to know what he was exactly pissed off at sometimes, besides, apparently, the entire world.)

Despite himself, he'd gotten attached. She was...interesting, for lack of a better word, and once she'd gotten a robot body she was even more so.

The first time there had been a break in the proceedings, he spoke to her. She hadn't seemed surprised to hear a voice - or rather, words - in her head; another thing he filed away for later.

So, girl, tell me. Who are you?

Through patient questioning whenever there was a moment, he found out, in bits and pieces, what had happened to her.

Hi! I'm trying to transfer all the fic from this meme over to AO3 so it's better archived and easier to read. Details are at http://captchalogue.livejournal.com/1365.html?thread=869205#t869205 It's posted as anonymous and I'm able to transfer any posted story to the author's account if they end up making one on the site later.

I've moved everything posted here by anons, but since you're logged in I figured I should ask you directly.

I can:

1) Put your fic up anonymously, like I did the rest of them.

2) Put your fic up and credit you as the author with a link to your LJ.

3) Give you an invite code so you can make an account and put your fic up yourself.

4) Not put your fic up because you don't want me to.

Unless you already posted to AO3 and I missed it, in which case just tell me that!
