HAL JORDAN IS BACK... and he's as crazy as when he left.
Rebirth has started off strong with it's opening sequence that mirrored Abin Sur's crash to Earth. This time, the "alien" is Kyle Rayner in what looks like an emerald ship of his own creation. However, that might be jumping the gun too soon. Kyle is dying. He tries to pass his ring along to one of the men who were there to witness his crash, but HIS POWER RING IS FUSED ONTO HIS FINGER! With blood dripping from his nose, he tells the two men who found him to "tell them... it has a name." He then passes out next to a coffin that looks like it was designed by Parallax. --> Could Hal Jordan's body be in this coffin? Who has a name? Could LEGION, the sentient beings in one who forced Abin Sur to crash into Earth be the one who went after Kyle? LEGION was first introduced in "Emerald Twilight" and those beings were not killed off (as far as I can remember).
Carol Ferris is back at her father's old airfield and finds Hal's old jet. --> In the span of two pages, we are "introduced" to Hal Jordan.
John Stewart and Guy Gardner, two of the last of the Green Lantern Corps member in the entire universe, go to a baseball game to "hang" out with Hal Jordan's Human side. As an Angel, everyone begins confessing their sins to Hal; even Guy Gardner! Before this, John and Guy discuss Guy being a Green Lantern. Guy refuses it because he loves, and is having more fun, with his new powers. --> Will all of us Guy Gardner as a GL fans finally have our wish realized? I hope so. Guy Garnder as Warrior was an "interesting" idea at best, but never really fit him. They had to change his personality dramatically to fit these new powers.
Some looser, who was badly beaten by Guy Gardner when he was a GL in "Justice League of America" 12 or 24, finds Hal's old Power Ring in Green Arrow's home. He wants to keep it for himself. He once sciphoned power from it & was able to track it. Green Arrow was able to stop him, but Spectre turned his hand, the hand that was holding Hal's old Power Ring, into ash. Green Arrow says, after Spectre leaves, "Hal fave me this ring a long time ago. He said, 'In case of emergency, break glass.' I think the glass has just been broken." --> How was this looser able to find the ring? He was using his weapon to locate it. Which mean, in order for him to track it, the ring had to have some power left in it. Is this how Hal Jordan will come back to life? By feeding life through the power of this ring?
John Stewart & Guy Gardner are talking at Warrior's. Guy begins bad mouthing Hal Jordan & explodes. --> Since Hal Jordan as the Spectre can be everywhere at once, was this his vengeful doing against Gardner? It could be the Parallax coming through.
We then learn that Coast City is "alive" once again under the clouds over California. --> We now know that it is not just Hal Jordan who is making a come back... everyone who parished in his home town might return.
We then see Hector Hammond having a psychic experience and laughing at the story Kyle Rayner has brought back from space with him. --> Hammond's advanced brain could easily pick up anyone around the world. Unfortunately, he is the only one who knows what's coming to Earth.
At the JLA Watchtower, we discover that Guy's body is turning inside out on itself. The JLA and the JSA work together to find out what happened to Gardner. They discover that the entire Warriors complex was destroyed except for the statue of Hal Jordan. Alan Scott almost sheds some tears for Hal as he creates, almost subconscously, Hal's old Green Lantern symbol around him and his daughter. Flash and Aquaman discover that Coast City is back, but only one block over and over again. That block belonged to Hal Jordan. Batman develops a plausable theory: Hal going from Parallax to Spectre was for Hal's quest for more power... the power of being almost unstoppable. John Stewart came to Hal's rescue as Batman defamed him. Batman states that the real Hal Jordan is back and they should all be on guard. --> The attack Guy had could easily be a result of Hal's anger. The good news is, Guy will hopefully go back to being a Human again and be a member of the new Green Lantern Corps that we all know will be resurrecte. Hal's statue being the only thing not damaged when Guy blew up suggests that Jordan had a hand in what happened there. The defense of Hal by Scott & Stewart suggest Hal's influence as well (perhaps he is affecting them through their rings since, at one time or another, Hal possessed both of their powers... as a Green Lantern or as Parallax). This would explain why Alan created the GL symbol and why John burst out against Batman (both very uncharacteristic of each character).
Finally, we see Carol standing beside Hal's old jet in a thunder storm. She somehow "senses" him. Out of no where, Hal Jordan appears. --> Is this Hal Jordan, the Human, returned from the dead? He has never appeared to Carol before, so why now?
Lastly, the title of this issue "Blackest Night". --> This title suggest that Batman just might be correct as to his theory on Hal Jordan.
