For the third year in a row, I ran the Palm Springs Half. This race is always two weeks before the LA marathon.
There really isn't anything much to report.
I spent the first 5 miles or so with the pace group below mine. I ran with my dad, Joe, and two other people from their group. They take more walk breaks than we do and run slower but my goal was to run very slow this race in an effort to not burn myself out before LA like I did last year. Last year I ran way too fast, got a great PR, and burnt out early during LA due to running at speeds I don't train at.
The first few miles were fun because I was enjoying the scenery and the company. Palm Springs has very interesting archetecture and most yards are done in zero scaping in an effort to conserve water but they make their yards look awesome even without grass.
Mile 5 or so Joe and I sped up and put distance between ourselves and the rest of the group. Mile 10 or so and Joe gave me permission to race the rest of the distance in, which I did. I was a bit faster than I wanted to be but not by too much.
The more I run the race the more I run it. The weather was awesome. The scenery was awesome --surrounded by mountains. The people were awesome as they always are in a small race.
I got home and went through my race bag and noticed a flier for a new marathon. The Inland Empire Mission Inn Marathon in December. This is exciting since I grew up about 7 miles from the Mission Inn. A hometown marathon! I bet a bunch of people from my running club will run it. I was trying to convince people to run the high desert 50k this same weekend but I'm torn between supporting a hometown race and running an ultra.
