My father gave me The Da Vinci Code in hardcover as a Christmas present. I'm on chapter 5, and it's pretty good so far. I don't read a lot of nonfiction, and as for the nonfiction I've read, it is mostly literature and hardly anything contemporary (barring Burgess' A Clockwork Orange, DeLillo's Cosmopolis, and Ellis American Psycho).

My recommendations for nonfiction are Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation (could also be titled The World as Will and Idea depending on the edition), Nietzsche’s Will to Power, Camus’ The Rebel, Montesquieu’s Essays, Bacon’s Essays, Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, Freud’s The Ego and the Id, Waites’ The Psychopathic God: Adolf Hitler, and so many others that I can’t recall at the moment.

I don’t consider myself a connoisseur, but these might give you something to kill some time with, think about and discuss.
