last kiss

"So you won't wonder," she says, moving close.
Wonder what? She doesn't say. No time to wonder, anyway.
Knowing what's to come, and how this goes,
I lean in, head incline, accept her lips again on mine.

And it's the very first time all over;
singing in my jaded heart, mind set free, and lips apart --
seconds pass as glaciers, melt forever,
lost in the unreal abyss that's all the world beyond the kiss.

And it's the very last time. All over.
Grip her coat and hold on to each second 'til it's gone.
I know that I am not her lover;
nor was I ever, truth to tell, but pretending suited well.

Two seconds... Three. No more than five.
Then it's done. She moves away. She does not wince. I do not sway.
I smile instead (she's not surprised),
tell her that said kiss must be the nicest of finalities.

poem, kisses, happy endings maybe not the usual
