How could they not fall in love? That was the main question to be asking. Just like the Dragon had said; they were two sides of the same coin; they were one half of a whole. And after all those times of saving each others’ lives, there was bound to be a bond stronger than friendship. How could there not? Fight, after fight after fight. They lost Gaius, they lost Uther, they lost Gwen and they lost Morgana. But they never lost each other.
Merlin had never realised how much you could love someone until Arthur. Of course there’d been others before him; Will. That still hurt sometimes. But Merlin was sure that Will would want this for him. Will would want Merlin to be happy. He’d want him to be happy with Arthur. But however much he had loved Will, it was nothing compared to the intense bond he shared with Arthur. Their love was intense, passionate and had no boundaries. Their love flowed freely through both their veins. Yes, they were made for each other.
Arthur had always been set to marry a beautiful princess from a neighbouring kingdom. But none of the girls could ever match up to Merlin. They’d never meant to fall in love, but they did. The first time that both boys realised they were in love was the night they lost Morgana. The two boys were sitting silently on Arthur’s bed, Merlin dabbing Arthur’s wounds with a wet cloth, even though he was still bleeding himself. They looked at each other, tears rolling down their cheeks. Arthur lifted his hand to wipe away Merlin’s tears, but left his hand on the smooth skin there. He cupped Merlin’s chin in his hand and kissed him passionately. Merlin didn’t even try to pull away. That was the first night they made love.
“Do you think we were always meant to be like this Merlin?” asked Arthur one night, with Merlin curled up in his arms.
“Yeah, and I think we always will.”
“I think you’re right. I don’t know how I’d live without you Merlin. I don’t think I could bear one second without you.”
Merlin turned to face the handsome King, his lover, and smiled at him sweetly. “And I couldn’t bare one without you.”
Arthur smiled back at Merlin; he couldn’t resist that cheeky grin. He kissed Merlin’s jaw, all down his neck, and lightly nipped his shoulder. Merlin moaned in pleasure; one touch from Arthur sent him wild. That night, and each night before and after that, the boys made love like they had that very first night; for comfort, for relief and for love.
They knew that together they could face the whole world; safe and strong in each others arms.
