Okay guys. I'm hungry, and there are probably people in line for this computer here at Cleveland Public Library, so I'm going to try, in my own fluffy way, to shove a bunch of Riley-related information into one EXCITING POST!
So, I don't have internet in my house. But I would be ecstatic to hear from ya'll, especially those from whom I've heard nothing since I split Greensboro. One time this fox was friends with this turtle, but then the turtle never emailed the fox, so the fox got lonely and then hungry and then it ate the turtle. I think I've made my point.
Cleveland is just the right amount of lovely. My apartment leans perilously over the scary part of the proverbial fence, but the building's situated on the border of a really ritzy neighborhood, so living there provides a pretty excellent contrast. The people are friendly, although as the only white people to live in our neighborhood, my roommates and I blame this, to some extent, on our novelty. Speaking of my roommates, we get along super well.
There are lots of pretty buildings in this city. I wouldn't have expected castles in Cleveland, but they're here, some in glorious use and others in depressing disrepair. Both types are gorgeous.
Downtown is marvelous too. The first time I walked there alone I had one of those oh-my-gosh-this-is-what-happiness-and-promise-feel-like moments. Today I got my free bus pass, provided by the fine people who operate City Year, which frees me up to explore the city at greater length. I've already made best friends with Dewey's coffee shop, which will be my new Green Bean, and as soon as I find an Asian grocery store that suits my fancy I'll be absolutely golden. And I also want boyz.
The actual City Year program itself is still feeling a bit summer campy. I say "still", but in reality it officially started only today. People seem to be exceptionally nice, and I too fit (without much forcing) into my customary, pleasantly snarky role. Nevertheless, I haven't gotten a chance to really talk to anyone at length, so everything remains fairly superficial at this point. Hype about the work we'll be doing has not lessened, and as productive-time gets closer I grow increasingly anxious. As the official new Poorest Big City in the US, Cleveland can stand some fixin' up. And I'm just the girl to do it.
Love and Begging for Emails,
rrrRiley!
