Flying the friendly skies

Hey kids. I came home from Nebraska today... at about 10:30 pm. Our suitcase didn't come home with us, though. Not yet, anyway. In Denver we left for San Fransisco an hour and a half late because someone FUBAR'd the luggage and then there was a thunderstorm we had to wait out. Handily, our connection didn't leave for an hour and a half from when we were originally supposed to get to San Fransisco... but it was impossible to get off the plane... and then it turned out the plane to Eugene was delayed about 10 minutes, so we ran ran ran all the way to the terminal and it was all groovy. Except our suitcase couldn't run fast enough. I'm going to be really, really mad if it doesn't get delivered tomorrow like it's supposed to... most of my summer clothes are in there, not to mention a lot of things I bought in Nebraska. Merde.

It was a totally different world there, which was sort of nice in terms of exorcising all of the school year from my system. We went to a lot of garage sales and thrift stores and did jigsaw puzzles and otherwise sat around. Uneventful, but nice. I picked up some seriously awesome stuff, like two more pink Pyrex pans and excellent fabric and the American Woman's Cook Book (1942). I now have instructions for how to cook Reindeer. And war-time cooking. It makes me glad.

But yeah, Seward is a strange place. It's very Wal-Mart and Fox News, coming from somewhere that's very local stores and MSNBC/CNN. Food comes in packages. Wal-Mart's grocery section is probably the worst I've seen... mainly because it was in Wal-Mart. And because they sell "immitation honey." They have greeters at the exits too now. I bought some fabric there because I wanted some of the exact stuff they were selling for a dollar a yard, and I still feel guilty about it. It feels sort of good to come back and read the Weekly and laugh at the cartoons making fun of the right-wing media and the alternative personal ads.

We went to a little town called Dwight (population 227) the night before we left for a fish fry, and it was really quite good. We also saw their little garden of Catholic shrines, which was a site to behold. I shall have to post pictures or something. They had a mannequin of a saint with real human hair on it that was pretty wild, but I neglected to take a picture of that part of the shrine. Good little venturequest, there, if you're ever in the area.

It grows late. I got an A for last term in Chem 239, which is what I was hoping for, so huzzah for that. But seriously, I'm tired. It's 4 am Nebraska time. Art class starts on Monday... bright and early. Hopefully it will be worth it.
