Sometimes I wake up... (for jmtooktheplanet)

They’d invited her to the wedding. Of course they had, because Joanna had asked if she could come, and there was one thing the three of them had in common…they would all do stupid, stupid things for that little girl. Jim was honestly surprised when she showed up, sitting on a bench on Leonard’s side of the aisle in the halo-deck of the Enterprise, which had been altered with Chekov’s talented hand to look almost exactly like a bit of orchard at the McCoy family farm.

Of course, part of him couldn’t help but feel triumphant that she was here to watch this. That she would have to stay and see him succeed where she’d failed - because he was not above bragging about marrying Starfleet’s most talented doctor - and that she’d have to put on a pretty face during it. Jim would readily admit parts of him weren’t very Captainly.

But maybe it was the happiness of the day, or the fact that he finally had Bones, officially, before God and his crew…and the Terran presses…that had him walking up to her during the reception and taking her hand gently. He hated her, that much was pretty damn obvious, but he didn’t want her to be in pain despite what she might think, and no matter how tough of a shell she’d put up for Joanna, it only took one master of hiding pain to recognize another, and he could tell she was hurting. Her jaw was a bit too tight, her smile a bit too brittle, eyes a bit too bright.

“You look lovely,” He commented as he pulled her to her feet, and towards the dance floor, relying on the fact that she’d lose way too much face for denying a dance with him, and put a hand at her waist as the next song began, catching Bones’ eye over her shoulder and giving his own little smile. He missed her response to his first comment before his attention returned to her.

“Means a lot to him that you came today,” he said, too quiet for any of the other pairs dancing around them to hear. “Lot to Joanna too,” And their daughter (she was his now too - officially) had looked as beautiful as her mother, standing up behind Bones as his maid of honor. He sighed and turned them around in time with the music, and then spoke.

“…Jocelyn. I know we’re never going to get along…ever. But…you still mean a lot to him. So, means a lot to me that you came. Made him happy to see you,” another turn and he tried to resist a second sigh, “So…just…thanks,”
