There are many things I don't understand in this world, but at the top of the list is the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Actually, I'd argue that I understand it very well, but what I don't get is the warped version of it that most right-wingers subscribe to. To set the record straight, here is the wording of the 2nd Amendment:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Am I the only person who thinks that this idea is obscenely outdated? I mean, the idea that we need a militia to protect the country is ridiculous. What? Is Britain going to come back for some revenge and try to take the country away from us? That sort of colonialism is dead (there is instead a new form of colonialism that I won't address here as it isn't prudent to my point). And even if that type of conquering spirit was still alive, we have a military to handle such matters. So, really, militias aren't necessary anymore. At all.
And beyond that, if this amendment does protect militias, then let's look at what militias are doing in the U.S. nowadays. A quick google search of "U.S. militia 2009" has led me to a number of articles pretty much equating militia groups to terrorist organizations. That's right. Terrorists - white terrorists - are being born and bred right here in the states. They are anti-government, racist organizations that use violence as their medium of rhetoric. Does our Constitution actually protect their rights to have guns? And if it does, should it?
Here's my theory. Back when the Constitution was written, the U.S. was small and wimpy. Plus, back then people still went around conquering shit (i.e. how we got most...all of our country). So, we added this amendment in order to better protect ourselves from invading forces (and defending forces...Manifest Destiny for the win). However, with the growth of the country came a great amount of security. The armed forces grew, other countries began to see us as a legit country, and people kind of grew out of conquering other lands (kind of). So, as the country evolved we kept the second amendment as a vestigial organ, much like the human anatomy has the appendix.
But I think the second amendment is now causing more harm than good. So, again much like an appendix that has burst, I think it's time we remove the second amendment.
