Christmas has come and gone

It is now the 29th of December.
Christmas was good. I went home two days earlier than I had planned while Travis stayed in Victoria for work. It was nice to just lay around and read and relax though, and I think it really helped.
I had a really good visit with Josie and one with Jill while I was home, so that was really nice.
Trav came out on the 23rd.
On the 24th we spent the day with Travis' parents at their house and then my parents and Jesse joined us there for a big dinner. It was really nice. Del and Chris spoiled use with a blender! woot!, and books, and a table cloth & napkins. Yay.
Then for Christmas day we were at my parents' house. The morning was really nice with just my parents, Jesse, Travis and I. And then we had lunch at my grandparents' house with Ali as well, then dinner at our house again with everyone from lunch plus Jenn, Pete and Jay. It was really nice.
And on boxing day Travis and I left Squamish at about 8 and had a big breakfast at a White Spot in Capilano before continuing on to White Rock to have a big family brunch at his aunts' apartment. It was really fun.
Then we caught the 3 o'clock ferry back to Victoria and lazed about at home.

It was strange, somehow in conversation on Christmas day, Travis' dad, Terry, was mentioned. Terry died when Trav was 7, from a brain tumour. But it turns out that while Terry was working for Whistler/Blackcomb doing electrical stuff, Ali had known him. So she was going on about how she knew Travis' dad from a long time ago and how she hadn't seen him in years, and how was he? Awkward...but we filled her in that he'd died. I felt bad having to tell her that. Travis found the whole conversation funny though, that she'd known him. So on boxing day when we were sitting at Travis' aunts' apartment on the couch with his Nana (Terry's mum), we told her the story which she found funny...but it reminded her of something she was meaning to tell me about...
When Travis first took me to meet her at her house in Chilliwack, I mentioned having a friend who also lived in Chilliwack and how he was about to move into a retirement complex. Well she took us for a drive because she knew the one I was talking about and we drove around it looking at all of the places and then left.
Then on boxing day, she remembers that she was meaning to tell me that she'd heard from another friend who lives in the same retirement complex that a "nice man named Nick, who hadn't lived there for very long, died recently"....surprise...so I thought that maybe it was wrong since I was pretty sure that someone in my family would have told me sooner. So then I realized that with Sjaan not alive anymore, maybe no one knew that he was dead....so I borrowed Trav's cell phone and went onto the balcony to call my mum. Yup, turns out that no one was entirely sure and they'd all kind of figured that he might be dead but Nick's family doesn't talk to him so they didn't know either. Great...so I got to confirm that detail. Which made me sad, he was so great and I'm very sorry that no one was around when he died. Trav's nana felt bad about having to tell me..
I'm feeling pretty crappy about having to spring two deaths on Ali this week....

So a somewhat awkward end to Christmas. And I caught a cold.
Meg
