I'm in love with Amy Hempel

Amy Hempel reminds me that short stories can be just as eloquent, just as emotional, and just as loaded as novels. And that sometimes they can be a lot more fun.

So maybe I'm not in a writing "slump" per se. Maybe it's time I adjust modes for a while. Briefly toss aside my novelist cap and put on my short story writers monocle. Today, I wrote two pages that I absolutely loved, the beginning of a short story, partly true, what I like to call an "extremely exaggerated memoir" while most memoirs are in fact exaggerated memoirs. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I had an amazing ten minute conversation with Emily Doerr today. She just opens up to me, and me to her. Just having her at the other end of a conversation leads me to these truths.

E: How's home?
M: I'm...I'm getting used to it. I'm content here.
E: Well I want you to be happy.

Thank you for reminding me that there's a difference. I love you #1.
