Damn.

[Shuffleshuffle. There's the osund of someone flipping open something. His voice is a bit more distant now, like he's speaking into something else.]

I've been trying... to contact my ship.

Your ship? Like another boat?

Ahahaha!

No, son. I'm talking about my starship.

"Starship"? So that's different from a boat?

A starship travels through space. Among the stars. Haven't you ever seen a starship before?

You... mean....

IN THE SKY?

No. I'm a Captain of one such Starship. It's called the... Enterprise.

"The... Enterprise." It sounds so cool.

What's the sky like?!

Well, we call it "space", for when we travel between... planets and stars. It's... fascinating, to borrow a word from Mr. Spock.

How can you go to stars? They're tiny. Wouldn't you run them over with a giant boat like that?

captain_jtk January 26 2009, 03:20:59 UTC
Stars only look tiny from the planet's surface. In reality, they're... giant balls of fire. Chemical reactions, pumping out heat and energy. Very much like our own sun.

[Frowns.]

Um... really? Okay.

[He doesn't really get it.]
