Commentary on today's race

Apr 25, 2004 15:16

1. This is one of the better Talladega races I have seen. The changes made to the aero package seem to have resulted in a more interesting final 50 laps

2. As much as I hate Gordon, even I have to admit that he earned the win today

3. It is damn nice to not see a DEI car in the Winner's circle after a plate race.

4. They set a record today for both number of lead changes and number of cautions. 53 lead changes is a tie for the most in the spring race here. Nice to see it. 10 yellows is a little much though.

5. As usual, the big one happened again. As usual, Tony Stewart was involved. Surprisingly, he was the instigator. He also brought out another caution later. Surprisingly, he admited that that was NOT the other driver's fault. Could we be seeing a new Tony?

6. The conduct of the fans at the end of the race today actually made me feel embarrassed to be a NASCAR fan for the first time ever. I know that Dale JR. is a fan favorite, and I know about the love/hate relationship with Gordon. Yes, JR had the dominant car, and if they were still racing back to the yellow, he would have won.

My point is that Gordon won fairly, and by the rules. Whether or not you like that is up to you. However, if you think that NASCAR is going to change a rule instituted for the safety of the track workers to make a few fans happy, then you are mistaken. The fact is that that rule is hjere to stay and nothing you say or do will change that.

TO ALL THE FANS SITTING IN THE SECTION ABOVE THE FINISH LINE AT TODAY'S RACE:

YOU, AND I DO MEAN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU, have made me EMBARRASSED to call myself a NASCAR fan. What happened during Gordon's victory lap was uncalled for at best. To me, it fits the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. Losers are supposed to be gracious in defeat, and especially so in a sport known widely for friendliness amoungst the competitors.

We teach our children all throughout school to accept defeat graciously and congradulate the winner, knowing that we will win some and we will lose some. What kind of a lesson do you think you are teaching your children when you tell them one thing, but then do the opposite?

Yes, you were not happy that he won. GET OVER IT. There is more to life than a sporting event. Just because your favorite driver loses because of a regulation does not give you the right to litter the track with your empty beer cans. It does not give you the right to interrupt another fans enjoyment of the victory lap. And, under no circumstances, does it give you the right to throw things at him. He did what was within his rights and the rules to win. We would not enjoy this sport if he didn't.

GET OVER IT.
