I want to start a meme. Without tagging... which I dislike because either I tag friends who don't read my journal or don't do memes or something. Anyway, take if you like, hopefully people will, that would be cool.
Writing Process meme
Everyone's writing process is unique, and a good way to learn new tricks is by examining other people's processes. Copy and paste the questions into your journal and then answer them about how you write. Feel free to expand as much as you want, or ask more questions about what you want to know from other writers. Goes for fanfic, original stories and poetry.
1. How do you get ideas? Do you go looking for them or do they come looking for you? Do you use prompts or do you wing it? Do you have an idea place? What kind of ideas do you get, pieces or full scenes/story?
Ideas strike me out of nowhere. If I go looking for them, they hide I think. Usually, I'm walking somewhere and listening to music, or I'm in the shower...which seems to be my idea place. I'm cool with that though. I get a lot of ideas walking around campus because I just let my mind wander and then they come ambush me out of nowhere. Every so often I get one during class or a movie or something. Though movies are pretty common places for ideas. Typically, I get pieces--a snapshot of a scene, a couple of pieces of dialogue, just a couple of sentences of something and it's enough of a spark to start something.
2. Now you've got the idea, what's next? Do you start writing or do an outline? Is it complicated or simple? Do you work immediately or let it rest for a little while, or do you forget about it until another day? Do you have an idea stockpile?
Oddly enough, I think because of idea ambushes, I do have some kind of stockpile. But it's in my head, so I really don't remember until they come back. Once I get an idea, I have to let it simmer and then it pulls itself together. My process really starts on its own without any input from me. Which can be annoying. But I let it just sit for up to a couple of weeks and then it starts to form more. As long as I keep thinking about it, the idea grows, and then usually in one sitting, I'll come up with the majority of scenes and their importance. Sometimes I do some basic writing before that, but not much, and recently any writing I've been doing before the idea forms itself out gets scrapped and/or majorly changed.
3. Where do you write? What does it look like, anything related to writing there like post-it notes or pictures? Or is it just anywhere? Do you write on the computer or a notebook or random sheets of paper? Music or no? When do you write, what time is it?
If I'm at school, I'll write anywhere. Walking around campus is one of my idea places, so there's that, and even while writing, I still need some thinking time in order to make sure things are working out. But I'll write in my notebook during class sometimes; sometimes I flip between my notes and my writing section. Other times I'll write during my hour off. Occasionally I write on the bus, but that's only if it's pressing and I need to finish a scene or write something down. The other place I write is sitting in bed with my lappy, and I've got pictures on one wall with a lot of characters and stuff. Big Iron Man poster :D. I just use Word, and sometimes I have music, but it kind of depends what I'm doing because sometimes the music can be distracting. Typically I use music without lyrics because that can make it too difficult to concentrate on stuff like wording and dialogue. But sometimes I'll listen to whatever. I can't write someplace I'm uncomfortable--I can't write when I'm housesitting by myself or when I'm at grandma's house or anywhere like that. I can't write in front of the TV either, or when a movie is playing. Most of the time I can't even type stuff up out of my notebook that way either. And unless I'm at school, then most writing occurs kinda late at night. That's the writing time.
4. Tell me about writing. Do you write a scene at a time or from beginning to end? Several hours or several minutes? Days? How about writer's block? Do you take breaks or just plow through? Do you change your plan as you go or stick to the cards?
I have to write from beginning to end, though with the one I've just started the process with, I'm experimenting the scene at a time technique and I think it might work. Maybe not though. Usually I can't do that because the scenes end up being too interconnected or dependant on each other, and they link to each other, so I can't end one without starting the next, and I can't write one further down the line without knowing what happened first. Yeah. Complicated. Writer's block for me is usually a signal that either I haven't thought it through, written myself into a corner or that the scene is boring and I need to skip ahead. Usually it means that the scene is unnecessary and I need to skip ahead. I don't usually write a story in one sitting, but it depends on how long it is. It can take me a week or longer to write something, depending on how much I get done a night, which really varies. Sometimes it's nothing at all, sometimes it's a lot, and sometimes it's just like a paragraph. I usually have some kind of idea outline from the waiting part, and I tend to stick to that somewhat, but things change as I write, and I rearrange scenes in my head and/or add new ones. It depends on how the story is going, but I have to have some kind of direction or I get lost.
5. Yay, all done! Time for editing or posting? Now what? More ideas or do you take a break? Do you proofread or have someone else do it for you? Do you celebrate?
If it's fanfic, I post it immediately because I'm usually so happy to have it done! If it's original, then I send it off to people and/or post it, but usually it's not done-done yet, and I have some editing to do later. I never do editing right after finishing. I usually let some distance grow before I look at it again...like in the fiction class, I'll have submitted my story first and gotten feedback, but then I won't edit it until close to when it's due because I need the time to distance myself. Otherwise nothing happens with the editing. And I celebrate with movies and games :D
