First day

Aug 23, 2006 21:00

Between 9 am and 9 pm, I've spent about 45 minutes at home today.  Which really isn't bad probably for a lot of busy people, so I really shouldn't complain.  But I guess I just do complain a lot.  I had my first day of work today.  It was a loooong shift because I was there for orientation, then she ended up having me work a full shift because they were short people, which really..they weren't.  I forsee already that I may get the hang of things quickly, and when Angie said it was a high stress job, she really wasn't kidding.  Which I'm not very thrilled about.  However, I did have to ask if I could work four days instead five.  I'd really rather work three days.  I've got a busy school schedual as it is, criminology is going to have a lot of research to do and if I'm working until 7, or have class until 8:30, I'll never make it to the libraries.  But...as I keep telling myself...it'll work out.  It's really in God's hands, and after searching for a job all summer, I think He wanted me to have this one, it's part of His plan, and therefore, something good will come of it, even if my feet are in immense pain right now for working a 6 hour shift.  It looks like normal shifts will be around 4 hours, which..is a little better.  I think I can handle 4 hours without getting as exhausted as with today, which was like falling out of an airplane and hitting the ground running, as opposed to just being pushed out of a car and hitting the ground running.  Running either way... um...yeah...

Anyway, obviously, I got the job at the old people place, working in the dining area.  I do serving, busing tables, setting tables, and some prep work.  And I feel like I'm in Gosford Park.  Even the way we dress is sort of..like servants.  And some of the old people treat us like servants, though some of them are really nice.  The head cook has a bad temper.  One of the older servers is a little creepy, another is kind of..strange, and one is nice, and then the younger girl that helped me, she was nice too.  But it's still really weird.  I just entirely have this Gosford Park feeling about it.  The way they treat each other and stuff... yeah, it was weird.  Granted it was my first day, but I've also had a lot of experience doing this kind of limited option serving, so there's some stuff I need to get the hang of, but other than that, it seems pretty...easy... other than, you know, the stress level.  It's like bulls charging into the ring when they let the people in for dinner, and then when we were just standing around before, suddenly you don't stop moving until it's over.  So that part is rough.

Newsies songs have been stuck in my head all freaking day.  I was singing Santa Fe while setting up tables and King of New York while doing prepwork, then Carryin' the Banner while serving.  ...Weird.

Archery tomorrow.
