A medtech slips past Captain Braca as he enters Scorpius’ chambers. The hybrid tosses aside an injector, briefly rubbing his neck.
“Do you actually intend to bargain with Crais?” It’s difficult to maintain an even tone.
“Captain.” The hybrid scientist turns in his chair. “Crais initiated a Leviathan starburst inside a command carrier. He should be dead. He is clearly alive. Does that not pique your interest?”
A muscle in the captain’s cheek twitches. Braca has no interest whatsoever in Crais’s survival. What concerns him is retrieving the Human Crichton and leaving Tormented Space as soon as possible.
“I have issued a general alert. Guards are doubled at every point. Neither Crais nor Crichton will be given an opportunity to sabotage this vessel.” The weight of responsibility for ship and crew is a warm weight on his shoulders. He intends to carry it well.
“So long as Aeryn Sun is aboard, neither of them will act against us.” Scorpius cocks his head to one side. “Do not underestimate their sentiment. It allows for the most unlikely bonds...and allies.”
"Do you suspect they are in collusion?" The former Captain had worked with Crichton before, but the hostility between them now seemed far more pronounced.
