Because You Live

“Dude, will you just chill?” Andrew exclaimed loudly making Jason jump. Jason had been idly sitting at the table eating cereal, hearing his boyfriend snap like that made him jump. He sighed, he'd clean the spilt milk in a minute. He stood up walking to Michael and Alex's bedroom where he figured the shouting was coming from. Jason's mouth fell open, much like a gold fish, when he looked at the bedroom. The once plain room was now darkened, there were candles every where; illuminating the deep red sheets that had been spread over the two single beds. Jason raised an eye brow at Michael who was holding a bag of rose petals. “He's going to love it, Mike.” Andrew sighed.

“What's going on?” Jason asked. Andrew smiled and bounced on over to his boyfriend, he stepped behind him, wrapping his arms around his smaller waist holding him close. Jason smiled leaning against him.

“He's popping the question.” Andrew says, Jason grins at him. “I know!” Andrew grins, reading his boyfriends excited thoughts. “I can hear the bells...” Andrew starts singing.

“Will you just stop!” Michael stresses, throwing the bag of rose petals on the floor. “It's... it's not looking right.”

“It looks perfect.” Jason says, smiling sweetly at his best friend. “Alex is going to love it.”

“I... It's not too corny?” Michael asks, rubbing the back of his head nervously. Jason thinks maybe this is all a little too corny, he knows Andrew is thinking it to but he doesn't say anything instead he just smiles and shakes his head.

“Like i said. He's going to love it.” Jason smiles. And he can see Alex's face already in his mind. His eyes lighting up and his smile wide and grinning. He really is going to love it.

“Michael wrote him a song too.” Andrew says. “Wont play it for me though.”

“It's for Alex.” Michael snaps.

“Dude, you need to chill.” Jason smiles. “Pandy, I'm sure once Alex hears it we can hear it too, right?”

“Right.” Michael nods his head. Andrew pouts but then smiles brightly.

“What time is Lex coming back from his parents?” Jason asks.

“Meeting him at the station at twelve.” Michael says and looks at the clock. It's almost ten.

“Then what?” Jason asks.

“Picnic.” Andrew says a huge grin on his face. Michael nods.

“And then you're coming back here?”

“We're going out.” Andrew tells Jason who just nods his head. He had figured that out himself.

“So... you're going to ask when you get in here?” Jason asks looking around the room again.

“Yeah. Going to play him the song... and then... You... is it too much?”

“No, Michael. It's perfect.” Jason smiles.

“You should probably go shower. Me and Jay can finish in here.” Andrew smiles. Michael nods his head, he looks around the room once more and heads to the bathroom.

“So, do you think Alex will say yes?” Andrew asks, opening the rose petals and sprinkling them on the sheets.

“I think if he doesn't Michael will be crushed.” Jason says wondering what's going to happen after tonight.

Alex gets off the train a little scared. He wore sun glasses even though it was the middle of winter. His body was shaking, he wrapped his jumper around him tighter, walking along the platform looking for Michael. He finds him sitting at a bench; his train had been delayed ten minutes. It's as though Michael can sense him cause when he looks up Alex is standing there.

“Lexxie.” Michael sighs. He jumps up from his seat and runs over to his boyfriend. Pulling him close and holding him tight. In his excitement of seeing his boyfriend again he missed the slight hiss that escaped Alex's lips.

“Missed you.” Alex says and he realises just how long three days is without seeing the love of his life. He holds on tighter. Michael pulls away and stares at him. Alex looks down, his glasses slipping slightly.

“Lex...” Michael moves his hands up to his glasses and takes them off, revealing a black eye. “What happened?”

“I...” Alex looks down, Michael catches his chin, tilting his face upwards. “I told them about you.”

“You...” Michael can't comprehend what Alex had just told him. He remembers back to when this first started; it had just been a fling back then, before love there was lust, and Alex who had been straight before one drunken night of fun with Michael had said he didn't want to tell his parents he was gay until he knew that he was going to be this way forever. At first Michael hadn't been bothered by it; after all he had only saw their relationship as a blip in time. But then lust grew to love. The fact that Alex had never told his parents about them had never crossed his minds, but now... those words were back 'Going to be forever this way' he was going to be forever with Michael. Despite the black eye on his boyfriends face, Michael found himself smiling softly.

“Yeah.” Alex said and he could tell what Michael was thinking and smiled softly. Michael reached up and pressed a soft kiss to his boyfriends lips. “Forever.” Alex whispered against his lips.

“Forever.” Michael smiled. “Come on...”

“Where we going?” Alex asked taking Michael's hand in his, their fingers dancing together.

“It's a surprise.” Michael grins leading Alex to the car.

As Michael drives, he has one hand on the wheel, the other linked with Alex's. Alex is humming along to the song on the radio and Michael smiles. Alex isn't goofing off like he normally does during car rides, he isn't jumping up and down dancing, he's just leaning back against the window, his fingers playing with Michael's; just humming.

“We're almost there.” Michael says between songs. Alex turns his head and looks at him. He smiles, one that meets his eyes behind his sun glasses. “You could take them off. It's not that bad.”

“I don't... it looks horrible.” Alex sighed. Michael wants to argue; say no it doesn't look horrible but it does look horrible. It clashes against his perfect features. His pale skin is now tainted with the ugly mark on his right eye.

“It looks sore. Does it hurt?” Michael asks.

“A little.” Alex shrugs.

“Are you hurt any where else?” Michael asks, and he knows he should have probably asked that before but he had been caught up with seeing his lover again. Three days felt like forever.

“My stomach, but it's okay.” Alex shrugs the concern off. Alex could tell that Michael wanted to talk about what had happened. He figured he probably needed to do that too. But he couldn't... not today. “I know you want to know what happened... but can we do the whole conversation tomorrow? It's our anniversary. I... I want it to be special.” Michael smiles. Alex doesn't know what he's in for yet.

“Special.” Michael smiles. “Course. But we are talking about it.” Alex just nods his head; he's not particularly looking forward to that conversation but he knows that it's one they need to have. “We're here.” Michael grins, he parks the car.

“The beach?” Alex grins. The beach is one of his all time favourite places in the world. It was at the beach that they had shared their first kiss; a year ago today. He smiles at Michael. He knew that today was going to be one of the best days of his life, the best day of his life was obviously a year ago; November 17th .

Michael grabs the picnic basket and blankets he had brought for their trip before opening Alex's door. Alex takes the blanket from him, and they walk hand in hand to their spot. It was the spot at the far end of the beach where they had shared their first kiss, where Alex had ran to when he had screamed at Michael that he liked him. Where Michael had found him huddled in his over sized jumper staring at the shore, scared he had ruined everything. That was the place where Michael told him that he was crazy about him; had always been. That was when Alex had jumped up and smashed their lips together. Their first kiss had been desperate. Alex's need to feel Michael close to him like had shown in the kiss and Michael had put every ounce of his love back into that single kiss. It was their spot.

Michael set the sheet down and they sat down. Alex leaning against Michael. The older man moved so he was lying down, he pulled Alex close to his chest. They grabbed the blanket; it was November, and wrapped it around themselves. “You hungry?” Michael asked, his hands moving up and down Alex's skinny arms.

“Just wanna lye like this for a while.” Alex says, drawing little hearts against Michael's chest.

“Then that's what we can do.” Michael smiles, he presses a kiss against Alex's head and smiles; holding him tighter.

“When the waves are flooding the shore, and I can't find my way home any more, that's when I...that's when I look at you...” Alex sings, his voice soft and Michael can barely hear it over the waves.

“What song's that?” Michael asks; he had never heard it before.

“Just something I wrote.” Alex shrugs dismissively.

“Can... Can I hear more?” Michael asks. Alex never writes songs; not on his own anyway. Alex makes people believe that he is just the happy go lucky drummer, but Michael knows that there is more beneath the surface. Every song he writes on his own always has some meaning, some important message. He never lets just anyone hear him sing them.

“I... it's not good.” Alex mumbles shyly.

“Please.” Michael says softly. Alex sighs and looks up at Michael he nods his head slowly before resting his head back against Michael's chest.

“Everybody needs inspiration, Everybody needs a song, A beautiful melody, when the nights so long... Cause there is no guarantee that this life is easy... Yeah when my world is falling apart, when there's no light to break the dark, That's when I... when I look at you...When the waves are flooding the shore and I can't find my way home any more... That's when I... When I look at you... When I look at you I see forgiveness, I see the truth... you love me for who I am... like the stars hold the moon right where they belong and I know I am not alone... Yeah when my world is falling apart, when there's no light to break the dark, That's when I... When I look at you... When the waves are flooding the shore and I can't find my way home any more... That's when I... When I look at you...You appear just like a dream to me... Just like Kaleidoscope colours that cover me, All I need every Breath that I breathe don't you know you're beautiful...Yeah yeah Yeah...When the waves are flooding the shore and I can't find my way home any more, That's when I... When I look at you...I look at you.. Yeah Yeah..Oh..Oh...Oh... And you appear just like a dream to me...”

“Lex... that's... that was amazing.” Michael says, he has tears in his eyes. He had never heard Alex sing like that; with such passion... such love in his voice. Alex looks up, he has tears in his own eyes and his cheeks have a beautiful blush on them.

“Wasn't.” Alex sighs.

“No. It was.” Michael says and holds him tighter, he pulls him up and kisses his lips softly. “Amazing; just like you.”

“Only because you make me amazing.” Alex says pressing his lips softly against his.

“You're amazing on your own.” Michael smiles, running his hand through his hair. Alex just shrugs and leans against him more.

They eat their picnic in a comfortable silence. Every so often they would reminisce on memories of their year together. Laughing when they remembered Jason walking in on them having sex and him screaming to Andrew. And then how they had walking in on Andrew and Jason having sex; it was their payback. Michael and Alex had laughed and they all agreed that they lived in a wayward house for gays.

“We should get back; you're shivering.” Michael says.

“Okay.” Alex says. He doesn't really want to move. He's having a nice time; just lying with Michael; being held by him. Alex stands up and brushes himself down, he holds out his hand and pulls Michael up. Michael smiles and wraps his arms around Alex's waist and leans up and presses a soft kiss to his lips. Capturing his bottom lip between his and sucks softly. Alex sighs happily and holds Michael close to him.

“Come on beautiful.” Michael smiles. They grab the picnic stuff, hands link automatically as they walk along the beach.

“Are we going out for dinner tonight?” Alex asks. They weren't really big on public displays of affection, not in restaurants or things like that, they were happy enough just to stay in and have a nice home cooked meal.

“If you want. I haven't got anything booked; if you want we could go for dinner.” Michael says. Alex shrugs his shoulders. Michael smiles as they get back in the car. He sends a quick text message to Andrew telling him that they were on their way back so that they would leave. He didn't want them there when he asked Alex.

They drove through the city, within half an hour they were home and Michael was beginning to get nervous. He was pretty sure Alex was going to say yes; after all he had come out to his father; knowing for sure that his father and family would disown him for being who he was. That meant something right.

Michael parked the car and opened the door for Alex who smiled. “Such a gentleman.” Alex smiled. They linked their fingers, as they walked to the front door. Michael opened the doors and held him close in the lift. He was peppering kisses along his neck when the doors opened. Michael smiled at a flustered looking Alex. When they got in Alex went to go to their bedroom, he always went there first to kick off is shoes and to put on his indoor jumper when it was cold. Michael took his hand and stopped him.

“What?” Alex asked confused.

“You're surprise is in there.” Michael smiles.

“My surprise?” Alex asks his eyes bright.

“Yeah... happy one year anniversary.” Michael smiles pulling him close and kissing him softly.

Alex walks towards the bedroom and opens the door slowly. His eyes go wide when he sees there normally mundane room now a beautiful red colour. The candles glittering against the wall, the sheets covered in red silk, rose petals every where. A single rose in a vase on the shelf. “It's...”

“It's not too much is it?” Michael asked worried, picking invisible string from his shirt. Alex turned around to face Michael, he took his hand in his and kissed him hard. Alex moved his arms so they were wrapping around Michael's waist and kissed him harder. When Alex broke the kiss panting hard, he smiled.

“It's amazing.” Alex whispered. Michael smiled, he took Alex's hand and led him over to the bed.

“I... I wrote you a song.” Michael says. “It's... just for you.” Alex smiles he sits on the bed and leans against the wall, grabbing a pillow and holding it to his chest. Michael grabbed his black Gibson from the side and sat on the stool that he had placed opposite his bed earlier. He looked over at Alex and smiled nervously. The ring in his pocket seemed heavier as he picked the guitar up and sat it on his lap. He started strumming slowly, his eyes on Alex.

“Staring out at the rain with a heavy heart
It's the end of the world in my mind
Then your voice pulls me back like a wake up call
I've been looking for the answer
Somewhere
I couldn't see that it was right there
But now I know what I didn't know

Because you live and breathe
Because you make me believe in myself when nobody else can help
Because you live, boy
My world has twice as many stars in the sky

It's alright, I survived, I'm alive again
Cuz of you, made it through every storm
What is life, what's the use if you're killing time
I'm so glad I found an angel
Someone
Who was there when all my hopes fell
I wanna fly, looking in your eyes

Because you live and breathe
Because you make me believe in myself when nobody else can help
Because you live, boy
My world has twice as many stars in the sky
Because you live, I live

Because you live there's a reason why
I carry on when I lose the fight
I want to give what you've given me always

Because you live and breathe
Because you make me believe in myself when nobody else can help
Because you live, boy
My world has twice as many stars in the sky

Because you live, I live, I live”

Alex stared at Michael, tears in his eyes. He jumped off the bed, wrapping his arms around Michael's neck, bending down and kissing him hard. “That...”

“Marry me.” Michael breathed against Alex's lips. Alex froze and pulled back a little. “Alexander Crawford Noyes will you marry me?”

Michael felt like time had frozen around him. Alex was staring at him. Beautiful, wonderful, magical Alex was staring at him. His face a mixture of love, adoration and amazement shining in his eyes. Michael wanted to scream at him to just say something. To say yes. To say no. To just put him out of his misery.

Alex didn't say anything though. Instead he pulled Michael up and kissed him again. This time it was sweet, soft, serene. Alex's hands ran up and down Michael's back before resting against the nape of his neck. “Yes.” He said between kisses. Michael felt his stomach twist with butterflies. He put the guitar down and picked Alex up spinning him around the room.

“You mean it?” Michael giggled.

“Yes. I want to be your husband.” Alex grins. “I want to be yours forever.” Michael grins at the answer, he pulls the black velvet box out of his trouser pocket and smiles at Alex.

“You'll need this then.” He opens the lid and Alex smiles softly at him. Alex stares at the silver ring, it's beautifully simple. Michael takes it out and Alex notices the inscription. 'Always and Forever' is engraved in the ring going around it. Alex wipes the tears away and smiles shakily at Michael.

“It's beautiful.” Alex whispers, he doesn't trust his voice. Michael press soft kisses to his eyelids, wiping the tears away. Michael takes it out of the box and Alex holds out his hand, Alex holds out his left hand and Michael slides it on his ring finger. Its the perfect fit.

“You're my fiancée.” Michael smiles.

“Sounds weird.” Alex says, staring at the ring, it seems to shine in the candle light. “Sounds amazingly, perfect but weird.”

“Just perfect to me.” Michael smiles. “So... did you er want to go out for dinner?”

“No.” Alex smiles and pulls Michael over to the bed.

“No?”

“Not yet.” Alex says lying down next to Michael. “I want to spend some time with you, and my new ring.” Michael giggles and wraps his arms around his waist holding him tight.

“Think we should get married next year.” Michael says, running his hands up and down his sides. “November 17th.”

“Best day of my life.” Alex smiles. “Sounds perfect.”
