Bubble Wrap
Michael, Jason and Andrew stared at Alex in amazement. The youngest member of the band had come to them nervously telling them that he had wrote a song. This had been odd because Alex wasn't the main song writer, or vocalist. Michael knew Alex had been working on the song, it had been Michael's idea, a way for Alex to get some closure, to write his feelings away and help him move on. He had no idea that Alex would sing it to them, to his best friends, to his band mates, to the person that had broke his heart. To the person the song was aimed at.
“I wish I could Bubble Wrap my heart,
In case I fall and break apart,
I'm not God I can't change the stars,
And I don't know if there's life on Mars,
But I know you hurt,
The people that you love and those who care for you,
I want nothing to do with the things you're going through...”
Alex stood staring at the stars. His vision blurred as tears fell from his eyes. They wouldn't stop. He held his body close to him, he was numb. The stars taunted him, stars were symbols of happiness, forever glowing, forever bright. Stars didn't have hearts that could break. Hearts that could be smashed to the floor and stood on with no care in the world. Alex sighed when he felt arms snake around his waist. He leant back against the touch, knowing who it was straight away.
“I don't know anything any more.” Alex whispered, his voice dry and distant.
“No one can change what happened,” Michael says softly, his hands rubbing gently against Alex's hips, comforting him. “No one knows what's going to happen in the future, but do you know what I do know?”
“What's that?” Alex asked, his voice getting blown away in the cold night air.
“I know that you hurt the people who care for you.” Michael sighed. “Andrew he's...”
“I don't care.” Alex muttered. “I don't care about him any more. Or what he... I just... I can't.” Michael held him tighter.
“I know, Alex. I know.” He whispered in his ear. Alex turned around and wrapped his arms around Michael, the older man held him close.
“This is the last time,
I give up this heart of mine,
I'm telling you that I'm,
A broken man who's finally realised,
You're standing in moonlight,
But you're black on the inside,
Who-oo-oo-oo
Do you think you are to cry?
This is goodbye...”
Alex didn't think he could do this any more. He was broken, he thought maybe he was broken beyond repair but no, he could get over this, get over him. Michael was there, Michael was always there. Alex thought that Michael's arms wrapped tight around him was something he had always had, because it felt so right, so comfortable. He leaned against him as they sat in a companionable silence in the living room.
“I always thought he was my prince.” Alex whispered. He found it easy to talk to Michael, Jason had tried but it was always Michael who he opened up too. Michael didn't question what he felt, didn't argue with him when he was down, he held him and listened. “I... He was always so beautiful, ya know?”
“Sometimes beauty isn't always skin deep.” Michael said softly. Alex looked at him, studying his features. Alex thought Michael was beautiful, and he knew that his beauty was skin deep. Michael would never hurt anyone.
“I guess.” Alex shrugged. “He's black on the inside.” He whispered more to himself then to Michael.
“I'm a little dazed and confused,
Life's a bitch and so are you.
All my days have turned into nights,
'Cause living without, without, without you in my life.
And you wrote the book on how to be a liar,
And lose all your friends,
Did I mean nothing at all?
Was I just another ghost that's been in your bed?...”
“Alex, come on you can't keep crying over him.” Michael sighed. Alex had been crying for the past week. He couldn't sleep at night, too lonely in the bed he had previously shared with Andrew. Michael had spent most nights holding him close, keeping him warm and safe, it wasn't much but just holding Alex made him feel like he was helping in some way.
“He's a bitch.” Alex muttered against Michael's chest.
“Yeah, he is.” Michael sighed. He couldn't believe that Andrew had done something so careless. He hadn't just put his relationship with Alex on the line, but the bands too.
“He said he loved me, Mikey.” Alex whimpered. “He said I was the only one.”
“I know he did, Alex.” Michael sighed, he brought his hand up to play with Alex's hair, calming him down.
“Did I mean nothing at all?” Alex mumbled, Michael's hands had calmed him down, his eyes were now falling shut.
“You mean everything.” Michael whispered. Alex shook his head. Andrew had had so many people in his bed, Alex was just another ghost.
“Yeah!
Turn on the radio honey,
'Cause every single sad song you'll be able to relate!
This one I dedicate.
Whoa oh!
Don't get all emotional baby,
You can never talk to me, you're unable to communicate!”
They were all sat in the living room, Michael was sat with Alex between him and Jason. They were both so close to him, protecting him from being close to Andrew. It had been Jason's idea really. They all needed to find a way to sit in a room with each other and not kill each other. Well, for Jason and Mike to not kill Andrew. The radio was on in the background, no one was really paying attention to it though, it was just there for background noise, but then 'What hurts the most' came on and Andrew looked over at Alex. Alex had his head resting against Michael's shoulder, it seemed these days Alex in some way was always touching Michael. Andrew frowned, and stared at them. He felt tears in his eyes. He couldn't sit there and watch them any longer. He stood up and ran out of the room.
“What the hell was that about?” Michael asked, his hand resting against Alex's head, his fingers threading through his hair.
“Song probably reminded him what an idiot he is.” Jason shrugged, he looked down at Alex who was wiping away his tears. He sighed and handed him a tissue.
“Yeah well he hasn't got the right to cry.” Michael sighed. Alex didn't say anything, he just let his friends ponder why Andrew suddenly seemed to show emotion as he leaned against Michael some more.
“This is the last time,
I give up this heart of mine,
I'm telling you that I'm
A broken man who's finally realised.
You're standing in moonlight,
But you're black on the inside,
Who do you think you are to cry?
This is goodbye.
This is goodbye.”
Alex finished the song and looked straight at Andrew. The blond had tears falling down his cheeks, his eyes were sad and broken. Alex didn't feel guilty. Andrew deserved the song. He had hurt him. He needed to know just how much. He blinked his own tears away and was surprised to see that Michael and Jason had tears in their eyes too.
“That was amazing.” Jason said, breaking the silence.
“I... Thanks.” Alex looked at his feet, embarrassed.
“Alex...” Andrew started talking and Jason and Michael looked at him, wondering what he was going to say. “I'm sorry. Really, I...”
“It's... fine.” Alex sighed. “It's in the past. We're a band. We have to put that behind us.”
“You're right.” Jason sighed. Michael nodded silently, he hadn't said anything about the song yet. He didn't know what words he would use to describe it. It had made his chest ache. “Come on, lets go grab a drink yeah?”
“Sounds good,” Andrew said and followed Jason out of the room, leaving Michael and Alex alone.
“Was it bad?” Alex asked. Michael's opinion of the song was the only one he thought really mattered.
“No... it was beautiful.” Michael smiled.
“Thanks, that means a lot.” Alex blushed.
“Did you mean it?”
“Mean what?”
“That... you're not giving your heart any more?” Michael asked, fighting the lump in his throat.
“I... might make one exception.” Alex said looking at Michael nervously. “If... if you want it that is.”
“Want what?”
“My heart.” Alex whispered. Michael smiled at him.
“I've always wanted it.” Michael pulled Alex close to him, and held him tight. “I wont ever break it.”
“I know.” Alex said before pressing his lips against Michael's in a soft kiss.
