So last night I was checking out the
Doctor Who Restoration Team's website to see if there was anything new about the BBC's announcement that they are clearing the 1968 serial "The Invasion" for DVD release by
having the visuals recreated by animation. While perusing the
forums people were talking about new efforts at restoring color to the handful of Jon Pertwee stories that the BBC cannot locate color masters for. Some tantalizing samples are available at
colourisation.com.
What was eyepopping was some of their test efforts with
colourising 1960s clips that were B&W all along. Now, I'm not interested in the purists' argument on whether this is a Good Idea, since these are programs that were intended for B&W transmission and never intended to be in color. Some are more convincing than others of course, but that we've reached this point technically that it's getting within reach is really quite amazing. Related site is
here (but down as I write this).
