Waking up is hard to do...

Jul 23, 2011 19:46

He'd been awake for just over 36 hours now. The SHIELD doctors were telling him to sleep, but every time he laid down to rest, Steve's dreams were filled with ice and falling...and Peggy's voice saying "You're late" over and over. The War was long over, and several others had passed as well, and Steve had no idea what anyone was talking about half ( Read more... )

Steve just laughed a little, "He meant the cheese fondue, but I had no idea what it was..." He can't help but start to giggle as he leaned in, "I can't believe this now...but I thought it meant...you know...'getting to know a dame' y'know?" He couldn't bring himself to say anything ruder than that. "I'd love to try some actual fondue, Tony, it sounds fun. And I don't mind Coulson, he's a good guy...a little tightly wound, but still."

He blinked at that, then scowled, looking away to mutter, "I knew he was trying to get in her pants!" Then Steve sighed because what was the point of being jealous now? In fact, the more he thought about it, the more he just laughed a bit, because at the end of it, he'd known that Peggy felt the same about him as he had felt for her. He finished his meal and looked around again before his attention settled back on Tony.

"Anything else you'd like to know?"

Steve shrugged a little bit and smiled, "Well there's not too much to tell...I was a scrawny little asthmatic, who got sick easily, and wanted to be an illustrator. My dad fought in World War One and was killed by mustard gas, and not too long after my mom caught tuberculosis and couldn't shake it." He explained all of that simply because he'd long since dealt with it, "So I was working nights as a janitor to pay for school when the second War started, then I focused on trying to enlist."

"No I never went back," he started with a shrug -- then he stopped, almost flinching when Tony tells him how Howard died. He'd know he was dead, but...hearing it like that, imagining what it had done to Tony at the time. Steve takes a breath, then shakes his head, looking back at Tony with a mournful expression.

"I'm so sorry."

Steve said nothing in response to that, letting the subject pass; he stood and followed Tony, shrugging just a little. "I guess so...I kind of kept a sketch journal out in the field."

As they walked, he reached out and gave Tony's shoulder a friendly, sympathetic pat, "You've done more than enough for me already, Tony."

"Still...I would hate to take advantage..." he tried to protest, but his eyes were already lighting up as he moved through the aisles. The phrase 'kid in a candy' store would come to mind as he started to pick up various items to inspect them. "I mostly used pencils and charcoals...water colors too sometimes."

Steve couldn't help but grin as he looked through everything, finally picking out a small range of pencils, a small baggie of charcoal sticks, and a simple leather bound journal. "This is plenty, thank you Tony."

At the mention of helping in the lab, Steve perked right up and just beamed at him, "I would love to help in your lab, though I'm not sure how much help I'll be. Howard didn't really let me touch anything."

"Well I have been trained by the US government to take instructions very well," he told him with a smile, making sure to carry their bags this time since it was the least he could do.

He was starting to really like Tony -- he was funny, and smart, and he wasn't treating Steve like he was made of glass. "So we've covered malls of the future, what's our next lesson?" He wasn't at all ready to head back to the SHIELD facilities.
