Despite the streaming sunshine, Dr Watson remained in bed.
Yesterday’s body on the railroad tracks was less a corpse and more of a jigsaw puzzle.
The note found in one pocket ruled out foul play. Its rambling stream of vitriol, blaming his dismissal from the army for his sorry state, was the last testament of ex-sergeant Trent, late of the Royal Berkshires.
Despair had won and another fine soldier was lost.
No, Watson would stay in bed today, lest he follow in Trent’s footsteps, or his hand stray to the revolver in the sunlit desk just across the room.
