April 1880

Dr John Watson, recently assigned to the 66th Foot Berkshires, woke wondering what the day would bring. There was a prankster loose amongst the officer class, and as the new boy, he was fair game.

‘Don’t let Lt Frazer get away with anything,’ his Surgeon-Major had ordered with well-founded suspicions. ‘He’s a lance in need of a boiling.’ Old cavalry pun, indeed.

In the mirror Watson found his inked-in moustache finally fading. His eyebrows were growing back. Nothing new had happened. Frazer had moved on. Finally!

Except, while dressing, Watson discovered that his boots had been nailed to the floorboards.
