To keep the Orontes facing into the storm her crew worked through the night. With a sudden bang, the engines stopped, the lights went out, and the ventilation ceased.

The sufferers below decks could hear shouting and racing footfalls of the crew trying to prime the engines. Too late: the ship had slipped sideways into the trough and began to roll. Anything inadequately stowed crashed to the floor.

‘We’re gonna die,’ sobbed one of the invalids and Watson had no words of comfort to give.

Eventually the engines rumbled back to life, but not the lights, nor the fresh air.
