GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK.

Jan 30, 2024 20:45

I am here in my New York sublet and have been putting off my action plan to write for about a week now. I have something very specific and lengthy to write about detailing my recent excursion to the YUKON territory which is a wild cold sparsely populated mountain zone in northwest Canada bordering Alaska. There are more moose there than people, they were eager to tell me.

It was a crazy trip and crazy (horrifying! traumatic, but funny!) things happened involving the Aurora Borealis and everyone I tell the tale to says I need to work it into a show somehow, which is why I want to write it out here first in all of its detail. It wouldn't be good for stand up, probably more of a long form storytelling show, like the sequel to my solo Fringe show I'm planning on writing. I have to get it down soon while all the twists and turns are fresh and I can talk a frenzied blue streak about what happened.

However, now is still not that time, I JUST DON'T HAVE IT IN ME. I locked myself out of the apartment today lolololllll. It was the dumbest thing ever, I can't even explain it but it was my doofus mistake so I sat at a corner coffeeshop waiting for the landlord to come let me in.

Here are some New York thoughts, then I will likely go to a Cheers type bar down the street and drink hot chocolate with bourbon and then go to bed and try writing out the Big Thing tomorrow.

- I had three shows here last week/weekend and they were all so much fun. City Winery in Chelsea was very dinner date vibes and the crowd was electric, then I did Rodney's Comedy Club on the Upper East Side and that audience was a bit more sparse as it's a brand new club that just opened but still very fun, and lastly Tiny Cupboard comedy club in Brooklyn which I've done before and is always wild and raucous. The best part about that show is they film sets for us from 3 angles so we get some great clips out of it.

- I have waited to spend a considerable amount of time here to say this confidently and with enough evidence to make this comparison, but: New Yorkers on the street are much, much kinder and more helpful than Toronto and the difference is staggering. I'm being purposeful with words here, not "sweet" or overly friendly, just genuinely kind and helpful. People here just don't have time for bullshit, that's all. Of course some people are abrasive and curt but I have just found that there is a general sense of community and we're-all-in-this-togetherness. The average Torontonian on the street is rude and aloof and if I spill the contents of my purse at a streetcar stop no one stops to help me.  I do love that city still for many reasons but that's a harsh reality, one I suppose I'm just used to. It makes leaving it easier, though, when I do pack up and make the switch here for the long haul. I've lived in Toronto 13 years and I'm ready to move on.

- I'm so glad this is a nice clean place and to not have roaches or rats/mice in here. There are these little blue LED light things everywhere that emit some sort of powerful magical frequency that mice hate hearing and so they are kept away. I like to think it's Mambo No. 5.

- I love walking and there's so much of that every day that I sometimes don't notice I'm not eating enough to help fuel me and then I get light headed and need Emergency Lunch. I do enjoy the exercise, all the stairs though are a lot to deal with.

- I'm eating really good food and finally getting a hang of the subway.

Okay that's it for now.
